I watched Emilia Perez last night and I have...mixed feelings? Zoe Saldaña and Karla Sofía Gascón were great imo, though Selena Gomez was not and I need the world to stop pretending she's a good actor. The madness must end. It's stylish and sometimes fun, but idk what it was trying to say overall, esp. w/ its trans themes. [Spoiler (click to open)]Like Emilia's trying to atone for her past, but she can't fully admit what she did as a cartel leader bc then she'd be in danger from her enemies AND as a trans woman. But can you really atone w/o fully admitting what you did? Has she 'earned' the right to get away with it all? And then in the final act, she's punished and ultimately dies for stuff that has nothing to do with her actual crimes, it's just about her ex and her ex's shitty new bf [a totally wasted Edgar Ramirez!!!], so what are we saying she "deserves"? And the fact that Emilia gets super aggro with Jenni when she announces she's leaving w/ the kids...idk, I could just hear the JKRs of the world saying "see?! ~Claiming to be a woman, but still acting like a violent man!!1" And she's allowed to be flawed, but the story never really deals w/ that and instead venerates her at the end, rather than looking thoughtfully at her complicated life...idk idk idk man

Hoping All We Imagine as Light goes a lil wider soon; I'm seeing Juror #2 on Sat and finally Bird on Sunday, yippee. Not even dignifying Red One with a comment, because no thx.

I thought so too omg. Like I'm not even CLOSE to fluent and yet I could just hear how strikingly different she sounded from the other characters. I guess she was meant to be American, but...???
