I’ve always wondered how easy is it for celebs to just exist. I know that some genuinely can’t escape it - especially if they’re new to blown up fame and don’t know how to get around it yet. But, a million photos of Hillary Duff walking from place to place in the aughts? 😑

I always assumed that for the vast majority, if we’re seeing them they want to be seen. (Ie: I don’t believe Affleck just happens to get photographed all the time.) Sorry to this Freddie Prinze Jr but I don’t think paps are trying THAT HARD to photograph him. So he’s probably right that it’s easy to stay out of the limelight.

But, I agree with you that there is a subset who at certain times generate a lot of buzz and therefore $$$ for the news outlets. In those cases, I think it’s genuinely harder to escape the paps.

Nah, FPJ and SM were on top of their game in the early 2000s, especially as a power couple . They would've been wanted by paparazzi at the height of their careers for sure .

Freddie Prinze Jr and Sarah Michelle Gellar were wildly popular in the 90s along with Jennifer Love Hewitt, Selma Blair, Joshua Jackson, Ryan Philippe, etc - they were like the Brat Pack of the late 90s/00s, they were everywhere. Freddie and Sarah just chose to leave it before it left them

It's so funny you use his name cause I was recently thinking about the whole "they didn't work out cause JLo loved attention too much and Ben is just a regular guy" narrative when he was keeping Rodrigo employed during lock down lmao

Cosigning Affleck. He doesn't have to mug and smoke dramatically on his front steps. He doesn't have to drag a cardboard cut out of Ana de Armas to a trash can for any reason.

And always with a coffee from Dunkin Donuts with the logo perfectly visible for the paparazzis to shoot. LOL

I think paparazzi culture was on a different level back then too. Both in terms of celebs courting it and paparazzo's approach/attitudes

I still remember a picture that showed Carolyn Bessette leaving her apartment building. The photo included a group of like 50 photographers just standing in a huge group waiting for her so they could all get a pic of her walking down the street. It was one of the first times I saw what it was like to be a celebrity outside of a red carpet event and I was shocked that the paps were so invasive.

Yeah I remember I think it was Louis Theroux did a documentary about paparrazis.. was really eye-opening. They were like swarms of flies around celebs.

Yeah, I’ve seen plenty out of celebs out and about with no paparazzi in sight - at nice restaurants, on a hike, at the farmers market. I think it’s a combo of if you are being actively pursued and/or if a pap happens to spot you. I know some people call their own too, but I think that’s a minority.

The Hilary walking posts is when I slowly realized celebs really do call the papz. In her case I actually do think it was strategically smart cause it kept her relevant and in people’s mind.

But I remember realizing it was a deliberate choice when Adele got big off 21. I remember thinking that it was interesting that I never see pics of Adele doing normal stuff like buying groceries and the like but I’ll see pics of Hilary doing that mundane routine. I was like wouldn’t pics of Adele be more lucrative than Hilary?? Then it hit me 💡!!

One could argue that FPJ and SMG haven't been relevant enough to pap since the late 2000s. But Jennifer Lawrence at her peak was/is able to stay out of the spotlight unless she's promoting something so its definitely doable.

Kylie Jenner was constantly "followed" by paparazzi, until she got pregnant and managed to avoid them for months. It couldn't be more obvious that it's a choice most of the time.
