I’m playing Dragon Age: The Veilguard and I finally recruited Emmrich so like ~12 hours so far?
Here’s a hot tip for people playing that I wish the game warned me about! It’s not a spoiler, but just in case: [Spoiler (click to open)] DO NOT start “A Warden’s Best Friend” quest until you have finished your side quests!!!
I have mixed feelings lol I’m glad it’s not as open world as Inquisition which was a slog to get through, but I also wished there was a little more openness to it. The side quests helped alleviate my feeling of being too closed in and gave opportunity for exploration, but I wish that also applied to the main quests which felt more linear point A to point B.
I have finally gotten the hang of the combat system! In the beginning I was just rolling around and running in circles (mage). The combos are really fun - and now that I went Spellblade I feel so cool and am having even more fun with the combat. And I’m SO glad I don’t have to spend so much time sorting through my companion’s equipment to get them the best gear. It’s pretty streamlined for them. I just wish I could change the color of their/my outfits. Also, I can’t figure out if I can change how my casual clothes look?
My main complaints so far… No spoilers, but again just in case:
[Spoiler (click to open)]I feel like there won’t be that much of a replay value beyond changing romance interests and character class? It doesn’t feel like I have much choice in the direction of the plot or HOW I’m getting to the endpoint. I also would like more opportunity to initiate conversations with my companions or have more cutscenes with them. I’m flirting with some companions but not really getting any feedback about it from them or anyone else in the game. IDK I would have liked more of an ability to personalize my experience. I think BG3 reallyyyy spoiled me in regards to replay value, personalization, character interactions, and romance. The PHYSICAL character customization in Veilguard is far superior though.

I do like the Veilguard companions WAY more than Inquisition - none of them stood out to me besides my #1 Dorian. I really did not connect with any of the characters in Inquisition. IMO, DA2 is still the GOAT for Dragon Age companions because they were all such messy bitches.
Ok it’s been like 10 years since I’ve engaged with Dragon Age, so I forget how region-specific this is… but I felt like there should’ve been some pushback from NPCs and companions about me being 1) an elf, 2) a mage? It’s like everything is all hunky-dory but should it be???

There should probably be more comments about character races (I'm playing a Qunari right now and not a single soul has brought it up despite the Antaam being a huge problem in this game) but Nevarra, Tevinter and Rivain at least seem to always have had more positive relations with mages.
