Roll out for the carcinomies! the5thcircle November 3 2024, 20:33:06 UTC
I hope he caught this early.

A gentle reminder: the WHO recommends colonoscopies starting at 45. You should be doing this sooner if you have a family history or are in a high-risk demographic (prior suspicious polyps, POC, Lynch syndrome, family history of colorectal cancer, FAP, IBS, or colitis).

Only 1/3 of colon cancer diagnoses have a family history. It can be other things than blood including 50+% reporting constipation. 1 in 24 diagnoses are people under the screening age.

I would also like to thank the ONTDer who recommended boba straws for drinking the prep liquid. It's remission year 4 and I'm due for my scope. I intend to implement that advice in January. The prep, not the procedure, is the worst part.

I hope your scope is clean. Congrats on 4 years in remission.

there's also the poop in a box option (cologuard), though i've heard those aren't quite as accurate

I think they are pretty accurate, they're just not conclusive and some insurance doesn't cover it. If it says you're positive, you still need to get a colonoscopy. And some insurance plans only cover one or the other.

It's not; however, even my own sibling would not go (because of COVID) to get checked. Something may be better than nothing. [shrugs]

Cologuard is a nice supplement for screening, but colonoscopies are still the absolute gold standard and one of the best preventative care methods we have. It not only finds evidence of cancer, but almost removes them in the same procedure. Colonoscopies legitimately aren't that bad, the prep is a bit annoying but it's not as big a deal as people (men) made me think.

Congrats on remission!

I wish I heard of the boba straw when I last had mine. I had to mix up about a gallon of prep the last time. I have one scheduled for December and I just have a little cup and two little bottles.

The prep is worse than the procedure.

is the boba straw b/c the prep is thick?

No but you have to drink a lot over a specific period of time. Plus it tastes awful. A thicker straw would help get it down quicker.

I make myself a big bowl of lime jello and just have a spoonful after each chug. It mellows the flavor and makes you not so hungry.

I did the pills. they are not any easier than the drink, because you still have to drink a ton of water in a very short period of time.

Oof! That was my second cleanse to prep for surgery. It was not a fun evening. I have never had to do it since. I'll remember to count my blessings.

Make sure you add ice too. And I literally found just holding my nose helped towards the end...

Very cold water, fat straw and chased with apple juice worked great this last time.
I’m a polyp maker with family history

So happy you’re in remission.

I just turned 40 and this is something to keep in mind. I had a colonoscopy at 18 (back when I had tummy issues). I didn’t have anything wrong thankfully (mine was more stress related to being a gay kid in a small southern town) but you are very right in that the prep is worse than the procedure. The procedure wasn’t bad at all! It was like taking a nap. Drinking all that nasty stuff pre procedure was the most unpleasant part.
