[Spoiler (click to open)] This show started off so strong and gave us episode after episode of pretty good television. Then in typical marvel fashion, it ends flat.
The coven members being killed off felt so awful and unsatisfying, with Alice dying unceremoniously and for nothing. Yes, we can say that she died protecting someone as a protection witch, but this “someone” didn’t deserve protection, as we learn that Agatha has control over her power and how much magic she absorbs. She was just set free of the curse that gave her such a shitty life and consumed the women in her family for generations, only for it to not matter. Then we also have Lilia who died for nothing as well. Sure, she “saved” Billy and Jen. But from what? The Salem Seven who weren’t even after anyone but Agatha, thus inadvertently saving Agatha who doesn’t give a crap about her in the first place. Jen was basically a freaking footnote, much to my disappointment. They could have done so much with her…
People also theorized that Billy created The Road as a hex, and from what I can recall, most people hated that idea because it diminished these women’s lives, stories, and trauma all to revolve around a male character and his fantasies. And that’s exactly what happened as I pointed out in the previous paragraph.
These women were aimless in life and struggling inside due to said past trauma. The show should have focused more on sisterhood, where these women that were so unlikely to get along prior, eventually learn to lean on one another and form a true coven at the end.
[Spoiler (click to open)]Even though I really loved all the episodes and loved the ending and how it all came together, I can see your points, esp. re: Billy, and totally agree with you on it. (I kind of wish we left the Hex creating to Wanda.)
I'm still disappointed Alice died because it felt really tragic that she broke her curse, had a big moment, and then one of our WOC is gone.
Perhaps if we had more episodes, we'd have a fuller story that felt more centred over the women? I feel like we could've dove into a lot more, since everyone had such rich histories and magic to explore.
I can understand your frustration, but I disagree that the ending felt lacking and rushed. If anything, it felt like the series was created with a clear end goal in mind and was fleshed out around that concept, and imo the payoff was well-earned.
