Shawn Mendes Addresses Speculation About His Sexuality: ‘I’m Just Figuring It Out’

Oct 29, 2024 01:07

Shawn Mendes opens up about his sexuality:

“The real truth about my life and sexuality is that, man I’m just figuring it out like everyone. I don’t really know sometimes and I know other times. It feels really scary because we live in a society that has a lot to say about that” pic.twitter.com/5AvgPePXzp

Cool but also,

"I’m just figuring it out like everyone. I don’t really know sometimes and I know other times."

I feel like he's surrounded by yes-men bc otherwise he'd know that "most people" (statistically speaking) aren't figuring it out.

This is like when that guy on that show who said he's not gay, said he sprays "girl's cologne" to pretend to not be alone.... you mean perfume?

I would hate to be famous and in the public eye during this. I also was lucky to know at age 4/5. I've known people in college where I knew a decade before they did (it was so obvious) and it was so weird but they're married to same-sex hotties now and have kids and are living it up (very domestically) and love it 💛

Wait, what do you mean statistically speaking most people aren’t figuring it out? I don’t know if that’s true. I’m almost forty and still trying to figure it out. I think there are many people who feel this way for different reasons.

Many people absolutely, but I'd say being unsure of your sexuality as an adult would be the minority of people.

I would be so curious to see the numbers on that, you know? I’m thinking about all those people who don’t understand their attractions bc of bigoted reasons, religious reasons, etc.

I don’t see anything wrong with being an adult and still trying to figure out your sexuality later in life. Life experiences play a crucial role and may change your views on who you’re attracted to as you grow older. I meet people now who I would never have been attracted to when I was younger. There’s so much pressure on celebrities to define their sexuality, and frankly, it’s no one’s business. He can take all the time he needs to figure it out, and good for him.

Nothing wrong with it, just most of the population isn't. And that's okay too.

Idg how most people misinterpreted the words I wrote above and why do people here assume the worst, jeeesus?

It's too early in the morning for my brain or emotions to get too deep in this, but I don't want to just thumbs down this comment and move on bc it bothers me and I think something should be said. But saying "statistically speaking" is super dismissive for the reasons dreamdate said; what statistics are you quoting? What study are you referencing? Don't assume everyone is like you and that your experience is universal just bc you knew your label immediately. I've known since I was in elem/middle school I'm not straight but I've been figuring everything else out since

And I hate the "it's so obvious" trope, whether the speculator was "right" or "wrong" in the end. That's the same shit magats said about Imane Khelif. We gotta stop falling into the same traps as our oppressors

i don’t think he was thinking particularly literally, i think he just meant “everyone” like the “everyone” people use in “everyone says”… “this is a common human experience” (which it is), not “statistically speaking a majority of people do this.” i could see myself saying something similar and i’m not surrounded by yes men lol, just by fellow queer people many of whom have shifted their own understandings of their identities in the past 5 years or so.

idk where you're getting your data from but most people who are unsure of their sexuality are indeed figuring it out at different stages of their life. I would say that statistically it's rare to have it figured out at age 4/5 like yourself.

100% people are still figuring it out. I know people who were 100% then realized oh they might not be in their 30s and now are married to women and put as bisexual. Like it's not that simple.

Not 100% of people are, that's not possible lol 😆 why are people misreading my very clear statement, jesus?

I'm saying not all humans are figuring out their sexuality! Many are but many are not!

And both are fine! Lord. Why are people on this site so cruel? The responses are either not reading my answer or responding like cruel assholes. (You're not being a cruel idiot)

I love that Ryan Seacrest is now "that guy on that show." So much for "I wanna have my own show on Bravo." 🤪

People are indeed figuring everything out about their sexuality (even gender identity) regardless of their age. It's been that way before and it still happens nowadays. Tf are you talking about?

Sexuality and gender identity are so fluid. I don’t have statistics but I would wager most people are figuring it out well into their adulthood and even middle ages more commonly than not. As you said yourself, you’re lucky to have already known at a young age. It’s not weird at all for people to figure it out later in life and everyone’s differing cultures, religious experience, societal expectations, etc also have a heavy influence on where they are in their life

don't say statistically when you mean anecdotally from your own experiences.
