Halsey's fifth studio album, The Great Impersonator, has ascended the throne as their best-reviewed on Metacritic. It currently holds a Metascore of 87 based on seven critic reviews, putting it seven points above 2021's If I Can't Have Love, I Want Power.
"...2024's most unabashedly ambitious record by a major pop artist. It's also the saddest, by about a country mile. One of the year's best? Yes, that too." ★★★★½ -Variety [Review] "Halsey's 'The Great Impersonator' is 2024’s most unabashedly ambitious record by a major pop artist. It’s also the saddest, by about a country mile. One of the year’s best? Yes, that too," writes Variety's Chris Willman.
"...if Halsey never chooses to make a full record again, she's made sure to say everything she needed to with this one." ★★★★½ -CLASH [Review] REVIEW: @halsey's 'The Great Impersonator' is extraordinary - a complex work of towering ambition, writes Caitlin Chatterton...https://t.co/zpBue6ceFK#Halseypic.twitter.com/eYhdijU4GB - CLASH (@ClashMagazine) October 24, 2024
"...a step backward and a look inward. The borrowed styles are musical safe spaces or perhaps recovery rooms, known environments where she can take time to recuperate." ★★★★ -The New York Times [Review] On "The Great Impersonator," Halsey channels pop’s past. @JonPareles names it a Critic's Pick. https://t.co/yXK9Jv0uEp - New York Times Music (@nytimesmusic) October 25, 2024
"On the surface, it's a tribute to the artists who made [Halsey]. But on the other hand, it's a brutal reckoning with chronic illnesses and postpartum depression, written when they weren't certain if they'd make it to the other side." ★★★★★ -NME [Review] On the surface, the ever-evolving artist’s fifth album is an homage to the musicians who’ve shaped them. Dig deeper and you’ll find @halsey grappling with mortality, singing from “the space between life and death”. "There's a constant tension between the playful wit in the music and the sluggish gloom of the vocals. But the best moments on The Great Impersonator come when the music wins out. Playing around with the past seems to shake up [Halsey's] imagination-and point her toward the future." ★★★★ -Rolling Stone [Review] REVIEW: ‘The Great Impersonator’ is @halsey's Rawest, Darkest Incarnation Yet
