The triple header continues with the Mexican Grand Prix, held at the Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez in Mexico City.
What happened in qualifying?
Practice sessions:
- It was rookies galore in FP1, as five teams had F1 rookies driving:
Andrea Kimi Antonelli for Mercedes, Oliver Bearman for Ferrari, Robert Shwartzman for Stake, F2 Champion Felipe Drugovich in the Aston Martin, and IndyCar star Pato O'Ward for McLaren. (Teams are required to run rookies for at least two practice sessions during the season)
- Russell crashed big again in FP2, leading the team to have to replace the entire chassis on his car. This also leaves Mercedes in some serious trouble in terms of the cost cap.
Q1:
- Perez is met with loud cheers from the stands (it's his home race). Unfortunately he spent most of the session trundling around in P20
- Gasly sets a surprising second fastest time at some point
- Norris sets fastest time
- Piastri has a lap time deleted after making a mistake during his lap and going off track. He tries again but only sets the 14th fastest time
- Disaster as Perez and Piastri are both out in Q1. Piastri ends up P17 and Perez P18
- It's the first time this season Piastri has not qualified into Q3
- Meanwhile, it's Checo's 5th time this season going out in Q1
- Colapinto, Ocon, and Zhou also out
Q2:
- Leclerc's first lap time is deleted due to track limits
- Norris and Verstappen leads most of the session in P1 and P2
- Leclerc only has one last try to get into the top 10, but he pulls through and sets a good time. Sainz also sets a good time, leaving Ferrari P3 and P4.
- Tsunoda crashes into the wall with 10 seconds to go, causing a red flag and ending the session
- No final laps for a few drivers who'd left it to the very last
- Albon and Gasly are both through to Q3 despite their team mates going out in Q1
- Tsunoda, Lawson, Alonso, Stroll, and Bottas out
Q3:
- Verstappen quickly sets fastest time, but the lap is deleted due to track limits
- Norris has a really slow lap for some reason
- Sainz sails into P1 with a great time, and Leclerc in P2
- When everyone goes out for final laps Sainz is in the lead, with Norris P7 and Verstappen P10
- Sainz sets another amazing lap and stays in P1
- Verstappen goes P2
- Norris is unable to beat Sainz and Verstappen, and qualifies P3
- Leclerc and Russell rounds up the top 5
