I took a younger friend out to an 80s club and she knew like zero of the super popular songs and was just like "I was born in 1999 ¯\_(ツ)_/¯". I'mlikethecryptkeeper.gif

I think it's good to have some cultural touchstones with a partner (don't know what they'd be for Ireland/UK), but honestly I just want someone I can text. I love my Gen X/Boomer friends, but dear lord do they send the most threatening texts purely by accident, and I'm sure mine are super cringe to my Gen Z friends. I'm about to give the dating apps a try again (I hope Her is still around) so that will be a top priority lol.

It's a pet peeve of mine when people do that, lol. Being in your mid-20s is plenty old enough to know about 80s songs and other music from past decades. At that point it's just a lack of curiosity and no one ever bothering to show you music they're into.

I was born at the tail end of 1994 and, admittedly, I pull this with my boyfriend who was born in 1981 sometimes just to hear him talk about his childhood while I listen with heart-eyes. (To my credit, I usually stop him halfway and remind him: "Babe, I'm like 30. I know what [insert topic] is.")

Oh it was completely fine she didn't know, she was having a good time and learning new songs while we were out. I just couldn't handle the generation gap reminders with a partner lol.

When I started my new job, I was 32 and one of my coworkers was 23. We ended up becoming friends but there were so many moments when we were getting to know each other where he would drop some random tidbit and I would think OMG how old are you again? It definitely reminded me that some of those cultural touchstones that I take for granted are unknown to someone else (even when you're technically in the same generation).

OMG I need to know what constitutes unintentionally threatening texts.

Older generations are mostly very blunt via text, and use a lot of ellipses so everything looks passive aggressive. The emotional toil that their "ok..."s take on me x_x. The threatening ones are more just emotional anvils, but occasionally there's an "I'm coming..." that's a little too dramatic with the ellipses.
