I'm still not over the fact the current Transformers run headed by Daniel Warren Johnson is an Eisner Awards-winning series for both Best Continuing Series and Best Writer/Artist. It's kind of surreal, lmao.
Anyways - I've been following the aforementioned Transformers (2023) run and it's been a good read so far. I'm over the constant character deaths, though, and hope we can just fucking chill.
Tried to dip into the rest of Skybound's Energon Universe connected series but ehhhhhh. I'm into military-connected brouhaha so stuff like Destro and Duke are doing nothing for me.
I've still only read the FCBD issue so far. And it was a good story... but it immediately killed off one of my favorite characters and tied in the G.I. Joe stuff, which I'm not interested in, lol. I do think I'd be hooked if I sat down with it, based on most of what I've seen about it, but between the seemingly constant deaths, the shared universe and the lack of female transformers-- especially after Ruckly made a point of including so many in his run-- I've been reluctant to start.
The FCBD issue was so good. The action in it was impeccable and I enjoyed the characterization of Megatron in it - He's not, like, 1000000000% murderous like he was during the All Hail Megatron series of IDW. He willingly spared that rando when he proved his usefulness in his answers. I can get behind that.
But YEAH I gotta agree with you on the constant deaths - It's happening so fast! Like every other issue or so, someone drops like a fly. The only thing keeping me from dropping it is the fact I can read this solo at the moment. You don't need to read the rest of the other series because it's been contained so far at the moment.
(Though I should say if you had to read another series from EU, it'll be Void Rivals. I love the slow burn mystery and character development of the characters in it. It's a refreshing thing to read if you're in need of a slower paced story.
I really enjoyed it-- the action, the vibe, especially the portrayal of Megatron. It would've made me super hyped to finally start if not for it reinforcing two of the things I'm least looking forward to, lol. Especially the death issue. I don't have anything against character deaths as a concept-- heck, "Code of Hero" is still my gold standard for Transformers media-- but I can't get into a story if I can't get invested in the characters and I have trouble doing that when deaths are fast and plentiful. I'm still going to read it, it's just a matter of psyching myself up to get started.
Good to know that it's pretty contained at this point, at least, though I'm a little worried about how it'll go when they get done with the character-focused minis setting up the Joe side of things and start in on an ongoing. I didn't actually know what Void Rivals was except for a title in the same universe that uses some Transformers characters but you've just sold me on picking it up!
How many of them robots got murked? I know they killed a pretty big character in issue one (and the writer flat out admitted he didn't want to write for that character, so he killed him off... which is a level of petty that I can respect!), but I didn't know they were basically Transformers the 86 animated movie-ing it with the deaths!
