Fuck the Bobba entrepreneurs and those other judges. This happens far too often than people think. Racists, especially whites, feel very comfortable shitting on foods of other cultures and guise it as simply as food preference. I once posted a photo of a cultural delicacy here in ONTD and the way people quickly reacted with “vomit” emojis is quite appalling-and ONTD is supposedly progressive. This happens all the time and people think nothing of it. Good on Simu for setting off this important discussion. I don’t like the guy but I can respect him for that.

Agreed on all counts.

Although David Chang has been problematic, I appreciated that he named one of his shows Ugly Delicious specifically to illustrate that just because something isn't what people consider Instagrammable or fancy looking, it still tastes good.

People can be so judgmental about food that doesn't look pretty (and of course they will buy/eat/post about food that doesn't taste good but looks cute). A lot of things that are considered mainstream foods don't look good but people are so used to the way they look that they eat them anyway. You can't tell me that tuna casserole is visually appealing but people have been eating it for decades! And hot dogs look ridiculous but people still eat them.

I like when he exposed the people who claimed to be allergic to MSG.

Eating Learning about different foods of the world is my passion, so I must ask what was the cultural delicacy you posted?

And I agree, (white) people who immediately trash and insult dishes unknown to them are one of my pet peeves. It's okay to feel squeamish about something, it's also okay to not want to try it, but be self-aware enough to know it's because of your personal preferences and your cultural/geographic background. I'll forever hate that one guy I unfortunately had to travel with once, who was non-stop making disgusted faces and rude remarks at literally every local food and would say things like "How can they eat that / Something is wrong with people here / *** clearly did not invade this country for the food etc" in public.

It’s the Chocolate Kunafa Pistachio from Dubai.

It’s racism, full stop. I find this is a litmus test on what people say about foods they’re unfamiliar with. There’s nothing quite like making other people feel culturally inferior than insulting the food they eat and love.

Oh, that one! :D I personally don't like pistachios a lot, but if I ever come across it, I'd want to try it anyway!

Looks good to me! People are so weird about different color foods, especially green. I’ve never associated taste with color. I hate when that shit happens on cooking shows. Like someone makes a matcha cake or whatever and judges are like “the green looks unappealing” or if they don’t like matcha flavor they can’t set that bias aside.

oh wtf. I love pistachios AND knafeh, so combining those two as a filling with a chocolate outside sounds dank. That's just racist, full stop

Oh that looks good. I thought you were going to say Balut

Balut lol

It is really ugly-looking ngl, but it still tastes good! I don't eat the duck as much, though, because I never really liked the texture. Penoy could be an alternative, but you won't experience the soupy flavor.

Hmm, I've eaten and enjoyed kunafa but idk about one made with chocolate... I'm not totally opposed, I'd try it, I'm just a bit of a traditionalist.

its not a kunafa made from chocolate, but its a kunafa inspired chocolate bar basically. a chocolate bar might be peanut butter filled, mint creme, or caramel or something. but the dubai chocolate is choco bar filled with pistachio paste and fried/toasted shredded phyllo dough (some recipes add tahini into the mixture too). most likely if you have any yemeni cafes near you theyve jumped on the trend and started to make their own homemade choco bars. its cute cuz you can tell they all bought the same choco mold from amazon lmao. so depending on who makes it changes the inside texture. some make it runnier paste inside, to me the best are the crunchiest texture of higher ratio phyllo to pistachio paste.

ive now seen spinoffs of dubai choco croissants and malasada

What a nightmare to have the opportunity to travel and then get stuck with someone who refuses to eat the local cuisine (and worse yet, insults it).

You can tell I'm still traumatized 🥲 In hindsight, I don't even know why he joined the trip because he was clearly not interested in anything & glued to his phone non-stop instead. Like, I wanted to show him the capital's old town (been there before, love it) and he flat-out told me he had already gone through it on Google Street View, so there was no need... I booked us a table at a traditional restaurant with a high-quality buffet of typical dishes from across the country, so we could try everything without pressure, and he said he didn't know if the food was safe and just ate boiled potatoes and MCD on the way home... I wanted so scream. The staff was so sweet, they always came to your table to introduce and explain the various regional foods to you, so of course they could tell one of us was being an arrogant, xenophobic asshole.
With a very few exceptions, I always try to try everything, and if I don't like it, I know for next time. I'm not paying hundreds or thousands for a trip to eat things I can eat at home every day. What the ( ... )
