I'll never understand how Trump has got this weird reputation as a peacemaker.

troops on the ground are reported - so he doesn't want to do that. he made sure that there wouldn't be hard facts and figures on the violence he did enact - so while he tripled the drone strikes of the Obama years, he made it so that there were no reports on civilian deaths.

All of these replies, but none of it makes sense. He literally says the most offensive and wild shit about half the world. Through most of his presidency people were anticipating WWIII. Nothing about him says peacemaker and idk when that belief started.

I remember seeing comments once from all these Trumpers talking about how much he loves the troops, etc when he was photographed at Arlington cemetery. And it's so confusing because he famously called people who died in war suckers and losers?? Like...in what world do they think he cares?

It probably started with the "America First" dog-whistling from his 2016 campaign, which was cribbed directly from 1930s Isolationism and its own AFC (America First Committee). That movement back then purported to be non-interventionist and thereby "keeping America at peace", but was mostly for the benefit of fascist sympathisers who wanted the US to turn a blind eye and even condone the actions of Hitler, Mussolini, Franco, et al. (Which the US basically did, until the attack on Pearl Harbor forced its hand.)

Anyway, Trump takes his cues from this history, and his MAGA brand very much wants to revive this type of '30s fascism and tolerance if not outright veneration of strongmen totalitarians.
