yah people acting like it’s OBJECTIVELY considerably worse than midnights is crazy to me and the number one tell that at least sooooome of the reaction has to do with people just being sick of her. or sick of the way she sounds with antonoff but idk their collabs are hit or miss for me but just sonically speaking i feel like TTPD is like “what if midnights sounded good”… jack remembered you can put bass notes in songs…

i also love its mess! i feel like TTPD does more successfully what red tried to do, which is sonically capture the highs and lows of an emotionally intense time… on red it doesn’t work for me (largely bc the max martin pop songs stick out as Hello, I Am Crossing Over Now!), but on TTPD i actually think the tracklisting really tells a story in a way she’s never done before and is clearly thought-out and effective. like the transition from “so long london”
to “but daddy i love him” is like… oh yeah you need to feel the wallowing in sadness to understand the appeal of driving desperately into crazytown. or loml into icdiwabh, the juxtaposition makes the second one pop all the more bc she just laid out what she’s feeling inside and now it’s time to go onstage… i think it’s neat! it’s new! it’s very clearly not haphazard or lazy even if you don’t personally connect with it. and if people are just pure taylor haters w/e i get that but if you’re willing to allow she has done good songs ever i think it’s crazy to act like TTPD doesn’t have some true career highs - at the very very least clara bow, the prophecy, & the manuscript all feel like the best iteration yet of what she can bring to the table as a writer when she’s on.

tbh i’m sort of dreading when next album she (as is her tendency) goes all reactive and is like “here’s a tight cohesive album of pop bangers! :)” bc that’s always my least favorite taylor… but ah well

Yessss the way you feel her going crazy in nearly every song lmao, I love that you brought up the juxtaposition because I really like the “fuck you stay out of it” in But Daddy I Love Him to “oops” in I Can Fix Him. It’s also better now that the fourth wall is totally broken, Clara Blow and How Did It End are good to me b/c of her obsession with fame and confessional songwriting, not in spite of it. And even though Midnights is the worse album by far I do love the existence of Dear Reader because it helps that she’s like “you shouldn’t listen to my shitty advice I’m clearly a wreck but also heres five more things you should know” cause this is just a giant compendium of that in the best way possible

Idk the album is full of self loathing and moral grey areas/outright confessions of shittiness, mania, her admitting her own arrested development….like this is not boring to me people!

Also I maintain that Chloe or Sam or Sophia or Marcus and I Look in People’s Windows are two of the best songs she’s EVER released
