The proliferation of non-alcoholic options is fantastic. I hope more get sold at actual bars and stuff, since the social aspect and the fact that alcohol is the centerpiece of a lot of third spaces is, for me, one of the biggest sober struggles. I recently finally had one that I thought was legitimately delicious, this Athletic one.
when i lived in asheville i used to love going to pisgah brewery with friends because they sold a local kombucha, buchi, on tap. it had enough alcohol content to give me a buzz while also being absolutely delish.
more breweries need to offer those sorts of alternatives. some of them would offer stuff like la croix, but that was about it.
Ooh I'd love to drink kombucha on tap like that. The only kombucha I drink is the bottled kind I buy in stores, because I'm too afraid of making my own and poisoning myself. 😖
i am not sure where you live, but if you can find buchi by you, i recommend it. i'm not sure how far they ship but i've found it at my whole foods in charleston sc since moving. my favorite flavor of theirs is water, but fire is also very good if you like drinks that burn.
I just googled "kombucha on tap" and found a kombucha bar not too far from where I live that I'll check out when I have the time, but I'll also keep an eye out for this buchi in stores because I want to try it too.
I discovered buchi at a vegan restaurant in Asheville that had a "buchi bar" where you could order flights to try the different flavors. Maybe you'd have luck finding something like that too.
At lot of the local bars and restaurants I frequent in Atlanta offer fun zero proof or low ABV cocktails (that aren't just juice and sugar) which is what I go for when I want to drink something other than water but also need to drive/options for my sober friends. It is really nice to see better options out there.
I can't remember all the specific bars but restaurants wise: Iberian Pig, O-ku, Barcelona Wine Bar, Double Zero, Little Bear, Leon's Full Service, and Gunshow all had at least one or two sober friendly options on the menu (as well as good food), but some of those have seasonal menus so double check before you go.
My local cocktail bar can make a few of their cocktails as mocktails. It kind of killed me to pay the same price for an alcohol free version, but I think some of the ingredients can be just as expensive as liquor. It was wild to get a "Scotch" mocktail that had a smoky, woody flavor to it. It was also worth it to see the look on the bartender's face when he started hunting for the recipe book.
Amen. When I’ve tried to cut back in the past the hardest bit about going out was the lack of variety in non-alcoholic beverages. Everything was so sweet, and as somebody with not much of a sweet tooth having pretty much just water or soda was the worst. There’s some really great mocktails which aren’t crazy sweet and non-alcoholic options now which is so much better!
There aren't words for how much no access to NA drinks is in my town. When I was abroad I was spoiled for choice. Here I am lucky to find a Heineken 0. I did buy Guinness 0 but it was SO EXPENSIVE!?$?!!! I had to go to BevMo to find it because it wasn't anywhere. There's Heineken and nothing else. And it is available at 10% of restaurants

Athletic started blowing up when I got pregnant, which was great for me! LOL The IPA is truly great and impossible to tell the difference.
