Wyt people speaking about making an Asian thing better in front of an Asian is very ick.

Simu Liu had very valid points about this brand and their cultural appropriation of bubble tea. And pls, popping boba's been in the market back in like 2017 or something. pic.twitter.com/ajRqdIPQYu

"Questionable" ingredients? Isn't boba just made from tapioca? That's eaten all over the world.

I have a feeling their definition of questionable means non-western.

I mean, even in the West white people will eat tapioca pudding, so these so-called entrepreneurs look even more stupid and racist with their dog-whistling.

Tapioca, water and brown sugar, if you make it at home. There are probably some stabilizers or preservatives for commercially made boba. Maybe they use corn syrup and artificial flavors, too.

Calls it questionsable, changes ingredients but still uses the name to make bank on an Asian beverage.

It's straight-up racist. I thought we have evolved from the "mysteries of the orient" bs but I guess not.

Maybe he does but I wish Simu had called him out on the popping boba. They acted like they invented it but it's been really popular in Asia for YEARS. I've been at bitch-eating-crackers levels with Simu since he took back his Marky Mark criticism but he's totally right about the cultural-appropriation of this all.

Yeah. I wonder if that got cut in edit. Popping pearls have existed for years - we have them as dessert toppings in Asian shaved iced joints. Hell, Hungry Jack's in Australia (that's Burger King for all of you outside) sells frozen drinks with popping pearls in them. Pretty sure Starbucks did at some point as well. So it isn't just a case of "It's been really popular in Asia for YEARS", it's also a case of "You're not the only non-East Asians trying to capitalize on the bubble tea craze".
