Unfortunately if I am to die of breast cancer, I will die of breast cancer, because not even the possibility of dying (which honestly I don't really care about either) can convince me to go through a mammogram. If and only if one day medicine comes up with a less torturous way of diagnosing this cancer, then I'll make sure to do it. I don't think that will happen in my lifetime though.
I’ve had multiple mammograms - they’re not comfortable, but they are not that bad and they don’t last long. I have an extremely low pain threshold and I can tolerate them. Don’t be afraid.
Good, thank you! I’m going home this morning and I still have pain obv, but not as bad as I was expecting. I will be glad to get out of hospital and eat some food that hasn’t been cooked to death lol.
I admit I didn’t particularly enjoy having a mammogram but is there something about breast cancer that makes you feel it would be less painful than a mammogram?
They're genuinely not that bad (to me, everyone is different and my pain tolerance was forever changed by needing to have several endometrial biopsies, so...) but just as everyone else said the ultrasound is an option. I've done both.
Please get your screenings. My aunt waited until her 70s and they did unfortunately find cancer. (She's doing well after a lumpectomy, thankfully.)
I have pretty large breasts with dense tissue. I’ve have two mammograms and while they were not comfortable, it was not painful. If you are really against having one, please ask for an ultrasound as an alternative.
I am with you but more because I can’t afford “preventive” care. So much cancer history in my family. My colonoscopy (that I was told would be covered by insurance) was finally written off.
You can only afford to get sick if you’re rich.
Edit: and I’m with you on the breast cancer diagnosis delay. I’ve been told I have dense breasts so a mammogram may not be enough but of course even when I had insurance it didn’t cover other tests 🙃
You can not be wealthy and have good insurance. Mine was $6 because I have a huge lump in my boob. But I agree, it's so ducked up that we have to ration healthcare because the system is profit driven.
Insurance in the US is so bizarre to me. My last job I had amazing insurance, until it wasn’t. I wish I could explain it.
I only meant you can only be rich because then you can afford the extra costs that insurance should cover. I have gotten sooooo many bills after my annual check ups that should have been covered but because of coding and requirements (ie: I hadn’t had sex in over a year but I was obligated to take a pregnancy text during my annual and of course my insurance didn’t cover it…I also had to get an EKG???? At least I learned semi early on to say NO to these tests) I ended up with multiple $100+ bills for simple appointments.
My mammogram was only $6. Ugh you're right about the testing. I had a ton of pre pregnancy testing and got pregnant quickly and the redid everything like 3 months later. It cost $350 and the results were exactly the same.
I'm genuinely curious why you feel this way about mammograms? There are other options as well, but of all the diagnostic tests out there, a mammogram is pretty benign (yes, not the most comfortable, but not painful and the techs are in my experience always amazing).
