VP Harris on 60 Minutes, Trump Flakes

Oct 09, 2024 03:08

For more than half a century, the major party candidates for president have sat down with 60 Minutes. This year, Vice President Kamala Harris and former President Donald Trump accepted our invitation. Unfortunately, last week Trump canceled.

No matter what happens, Republicans are the winners because they've pushed the Democrats so far right. I can't get over being to the right of REAGAN on Palestine.

It's become a choice between a right-wing party vs a far-right wing party. I feel so sorry for progressives and left leaning liberals. And anyone with a conscience really.

I just don't understand why so many political parties, in every corner of the globe, are fighting over this small group of centre right voters. Why not just move to the left and scoop up the boatload of voters that you've spent years alienating rather than a bunch of 'undecideds' who probably won't vote for you anyway.

in the case of the US, probably because a recent poll indicated 47% of voters thought harris was too liberal or progressive, while only 9% thought she wasn’t liberal or progressive enough: https://nymag.com/intelligencer/article/presidential-polls-trump-moderate.html

(and a bunch of that 9% - already a small figure - is likely to be concentrated in already very blue states like california and new york, so winning them over wouldn’t do anything electorally)

i find this election as depressing as anyone else, but the idea that the american public is full of people desperate for a leftward turn that politicians are refusing to give them is wishful thinking

I guess we're just going to continue to watch America slide into full-on fascism.

ETA: I was thinking on this and one of the biggest issues is that these people who think she's too liberal or progressive also think Harris has actually progressive ideas. They think she's a communist.

I think if America used popular vote this would be more plausible.

My republican dad is always against the popular vote because the big bad liberal cities would “sway everything.” If it’s the will of the majority of the population of this country then so be it. That’s how this shit was intended. The electoral college is ridiculous and outdated.

absolutely, the electoral college is the core issue. the only other time since 1988 where a republican president won the popular vote was 2004 bush. the fact we keep having these "close" elections yet democrats win the popular vote by tens of millions is actually insane.

The gerrymandering is insane as well. Just absolutely ridiculous.

I feel like a grandma but the left doesn't show up as a reliable voting block vs centre swing votes.

I know we're talking about American elections here, but federally in Canada our elections are largely decided by Conservative/Liberal swing voters who vote on vibes. I mean look at Ford and Polievre. Two dangerous idiots who are have or are coming near power because the centre are bored of incumbents and want someone else to have a turn.

It doesn't help that all news stations/papers are owned by far right oligarchs.

Yeah im reading a book rn about how the richest people are spending disgusting amounts of money to form media and general public perception to create the “america” they want (which isnt democracy). And its working. All the left has is george soros.

I've only ever voted NDP federally once, Jack Layton era, because that was legitimately the ONLY time in memory that they had even a slim hope of rattling any cages in my neck of the woods. Every other year has been Liberal even though I don't particularly like them but it's usually the lesser of two shit options. Not that it even matters in Southern AB. My riding has been some form of conservative party since the 50's.

The liberals are essentially a right of center party now, it's ridiculous. Provincially the AB NDP is more in line with the Lougheed Conservatives than anything else.

Do we actually have numbers on this? Because I think you might be under estimating one side and over estimating the other. At least in the US I dont think the left outnumbers moderates/never trump republicans.
