They really lost the plot after Season 1/2. Angel was only an interesting character as a dark anti-hero. The softening of him (so they could pair him with Cordelia and have it be believable) ruined him. Season 5 worked somewhat because they could shift the comic relief role to Spike and let Angel be grey again. But then everything else about that season.... alas.

That being said, I've never been more "EXCUSE ME?!?!?" at the last minute of a series finale so they'll always have my respect for that.

I really hated when they tried to pair him and Cordelia together. It was NOT needed. They were way better off as friends. They didn't even have any chemistry. I feel like writers keep forgetting or purposely ignoring the fact that you don't need to romantically pair of opposite sex friends just because they happen to be straight.

Same. There was ZERO need for Angel/Cordelia to get together. They were much better off as bffs/Bro&sis. Plus it just turned into a generic "male lead/female lead must be together"

Still sad we never got to see Buffy react to their friendship

IA! They clearly were hurting for a Buffy-style love interest for him after three seasons (Kate fell flat, Darla was amazing but evil) and they didn't want to do the work of writing a new character. I think we could all feel that laziness in the Cordelia pairing.

Still don't understand why they then blew all that up with Conner, but... truly some weird people on that writing team.

I feel like the minority on the internet these days for thinking that, but yep I agree! It felt like both Angel and Cordelia’s character got changed a little too much in season 3 to try and make that ship work, and the characters really only had chemistry as friends anyway.

In hindsight I wonder if the network had something to do with it, if the network was asking for some more romance on the show and why not pair off the leads, but it just felt so forced and unnecessary. Idk maybe I would have been more onboard even if it had been a more low key friends to lovers deal, but instead they tried to make it this really grand and epic romance with Lorne telling them that they were both champions, and so obviously they were destined to be together.

I have the same issue.

I also still just wonder, before Joss decided he had it out for Charisma, what was the long term plan making those two a thing? Taking away his curse/nullifying the threat of it would have taken out a huge part of the show so... what, they were going to come up with lots of tortured excuses to prevent them getting together? Let them be together but then always have this awkward "well he ain't evil, so clearly he doesn't love her as much as Buffy" issue hanging over it?

Agreed on the series finale. One of the best cause they didn't fuck around.
