rez ball: this hit all the typical sports movie beats so if that’s not your bag you might not like it much, but i really enjoyed it. dealt with a lot of heavy topics (such as suicide and alcoholism), but with a lot of compassion. great performances and wow, new mexico looked beautiful.
anora: i saw this in an absolutely packed theatre with a crowd that was totally game, which was a blast. not to be like “and then everybody clapped” but there were two separate spontaneous rounds of applause during the movie lol and all the comedy really landed. mikey madison crushed. the stuff behind the spoiler tags is not really a movie spoiler, but stuff i was glad i didn’t know going in. [Spoiler (click to open)]the supporting cast was so solid that i can see anyone being someone’s favourite, but it was yuriy borisov for me. i didn’t see the way his character developed coming at all, but i loved that as well as his performance. also went “hm, i wonder if this nyc-set movie will feature anyone from the americans” since it felt like they cycled through a ton of russian-speaking actors in the new york area lol - and then vanya’s mom walked in and i went aha, it’s poor sad sofia! anyway, i’m excited to see how everyone responds to this as it rolls out and i’m really glad i drafted it for my fantasy league lol
i mentioned in other posts that i read the count of monte cristo over the summer for the first time and was eager to see the new french adaptation. i was having a hell of a time figuring out if it even released here (the only screenings on cineplex’s site are in quebec - unsurprising - and one single showing in eastern ontario). while searching i found out a francophone society in town is doing a free screening on saturday, which was an awesome surprise. a friend of mine who hasn’t read the book is coming with because she was intrigued, so i’m really hoping it’s as entertaining as it should be. very excited regardless!

I haven't read the count of monte cristo book but I very much enjoyed the film! I now see why it has engaged so many people over the years. I think it works as a longer film as well, it doesn't drag at all. I hope you get to see it and enjoy it!
