I can’t believe the pandemic didn’t kill cruises.

They're more popular than ever, and yes, it does have a lot of issues that will take decades to even begin to tackle (environmental damage, its role in overtourism, etc.).

I wasn't a believer until I took a cruise that was less than $1,000 per person including drinks and internet and gratuities, 6 nights on Celebrity to Cozumel, Costa Maya, and the Bahamas. I was hooked. They really do have everything, and the ship was only half full so we had a grand time. My second cruise, not so much, but still really enjoyed it.

$1000 per person for 6 nights? $1000 per night?

No, total, including taxes and fees (but not including excursions - we went snorkeling and I did a bike and kayak tour and then we went to Virgin Voyages' private beach club with the sign taken down for the day LMAO - and flights to Fort Lauderdale). And that included food, alcohol, entertainment, the hot entertainment staff guy I accidentally stabbed with a fork on the snorkeling tour that he was shadowing that day, etc.

I really enjoyed my Alaska cruise this year. it was my dad's bucket list item and we were going to go in 2020 but the pandemic happened and he got cancer.

We loved it. got to see glacier bay (which they only allow two ships in per day) and the skagway train.

mum went on one to alaska yeaaaars ago. she loved it. she and i went back to alaska proper the next year because she wanted to see more. the ferry from juneau to skagway it so boring and skagway is so nothing for an 8hr trip (anything more than 1hr each way was too much). sitka was my favourite. she lived there for 6mo or so a few years back

My mom’s the exact opposite. She’s watched Jaws, Perfect Storm, Megalodon, and Titanic so much she will never set foot on a boat again.

Maybe you should do what my Bother does when I even hint that I might like to go on a cruise someday.
1. Talk about the Norovirus outbreaks on cruise ships. (links has other outbreaks of gastrointestinal illness on cruise ships too)
https://www.cdc.gov/vessel-sanitation/cruise-ship-outbreaks/index.html
2. Bring up the times a ship's sewer system backed up.

The sewer backing up was just one of a LOT that went wrong all at once. Carnival renamed the ship to pretend it was "brand new" but it's now just the Carnival Sunrise. Never forget!

my parents went on a cruise last spring bc they both turned 60... their other two options were Japan or South Africa... they picked the damn cruise and also said they'd go again and asked if I'd come with them. I can't think of anything I'd like to do less. There is nothing I would want to do there, except look at the horizon. I hate carpets.

Cruises suck BUT they are the only way some people with mobility issues can go on vacation. I work with a woman in a power wheelchair and if it werent for cruises she couldn't travel.

that is an excellent point. my issue (even before covid) is being trapped with no escape. not for danger reasons. just mental health ones? i don't know if i want to be around people all the time and maybe hate something fundamental about it and i have to just keep going or be fucked and out of money
