the devastation in western north carolina feels like a nightmare. so many people's lives have been absolutely ruined. there are several towns that nobody can get into or out of because the roads are demolished, washed out, or covered in debris.
one bridge section of i-40 completely collapsed on both sides, another section of i-40 collapsed further down on one side (and a man driving from the opposite side of the barrier that saw it collapsed risked his life by jumping over the interstate barricade and into oncoming traffic to stop cars so they wouldn't plunge over the edge).
water supplies were stored in a city that is only accessible via helicopter, and now residents are waiting for water supplies to be driven in from other states.
not to mention, cell towers were down for about 48 hours, some still down, so the only people able to communicate with the outside world were those with satellite capabilities. so many people are missing loved ones and unsure if something happened to them, or they just don't have cell signal to reach out. it's all very, very scary.
yes! so much help has already arrived there, but this evening i heard from a friend who knows someone in search and rescue, and according to them the chimney rock area has so many bodies they've run out of body bags. i just watched a briefing of local towns and first responders, and they're only saying 30 people so far have died. i wonder how much that count will grow as they're able to get access to more areas, and if chimney rock is part of that body count.
the first responders are going to have so much trauma from this situation. my cousin, who was an emt, never emotionally recovered from katrina and the baggage of it caused him to end his life early.
i hope they all find the therapy they need to process this horror.
