September 27, 2024 One of the most acclaimed actresses of her or any other generation, Maggie Smith began her career on the British stage in the 1950s. She got her first Oscar nomination in 1965, playing Desdemona (opposite a blackface Laurence Olivier; sign of the times), before winning Best Actress in 1969 for The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie (it holds up; see it, if you’re only familiar with her 21st century work). Another Oscar would follow (from six nominations), along with four Emmys, five BAFTAs, three Golden Globes, five SAG Awards, and a Tony.
She is survived by her two sons and five grandchildren.
