the problem with leo is that no matter how much he immerses himself, how much he tries to hide in a role, you're still looking at leo. i think his fame is part of it but also he's just got such a distinct look that he can never go full chameleon if he tried

Do you feel that about other very/top famous actors?

I get that about some people too. But I can't think of any alias where I simply can't get past them

definitely some but not all. i think if tom cruise really tries he can do it incredibly well (like tropic thunder), same with will smith.

it's just something with leo where you'll always see leo. it's the same problem jen aniston has but that's more about the fact that she's styled herself on and of screen the same way for decades

When I finally recognized Tom Cruise in Tropic Thunder it was like seeing the image in those magic eye books.

I have to throw in Collateral when it comes to Tom Cruise. I know it’s been 20 years since that movie came out (what is time?!?!?!) but that movie reminded me that he’s legit.

As a hater of Tom Cruise, I agree. I see him in the beginning, but he can disappear into a role. I think his problem is that he just does a lot of action movies so you kind of expect the same thing from him.

personally i find leo an incredibly effortful actor tbh - it’s not just that i’m always seeing leo, i’m always seeing Leo Trying Very Hard To Act. with someone like, idk, george clooney, sure i always see george clooney but he has a very relaxed and natural screen presence so i can still suspend disbelief that way. in killers of the flower moon i didn’t forget i was watching deniro but i wasn’t constantly distracted by how hard he was trying to get my attention… but i was distracted by how deliberate every little twitch of leo’s face was.

(i don’t think he had this problem when he was younger incidentally! love him in r&j, titanic etc lol)

i think that's it. he's a great actor but you can see those acting ticks as they happen. sometimes he's more natural (tarantino gets that out of him) but a lot of the time you see ACTING

yes! his face isn't versatile. he doesn't have angles... i don't know how to describe it but maybe his face is too symmetrical and flat? one dimensional? he's always just leo to me. but maybe (to martins' point) it is kind of an old timey actor thing to play yourself, over and over.
