Okay I'm doing an ONTD doesn't watch because I just want to get on a soapbox to rant about the Gilmore Girls revival lol. it didn't work because ASP didn't watch/want to deal with season 7 because she didn't write it, so the revival was almost a do-over for her. but it doesn't make sense. Lorelai and Luke only NOW talking about having more kids when she's almost 50 (even though she said multiple times in the original show that she wanted more kids and so did Luke), them not being married, Logan engaged to a girl his family set him up even though season 7 Logan had so much character growth that he would never, and Rory sleeping with Logan even though he's engaged and she's dating someone (not that that's super out of character for her LOL, but it just doesn't ring true with where they left the story in season 7 ( ... )

I recently rewatched the whole show and the revival (hadn't watched it since it came out) and I was annoyed with everything all over again. I hate what ASP did and I don't understand why you'd want to ruin your own characters like that.

exactly. it's total garbage writing. Lorelai and Luke got back together in the original series because they knew they wanted to be together, they had already been engaged, and suddenly it's been 9 years and they're STILL not married? that doesn't make any sense. Luke says "what about the kids" in season 5, Lorelai tells the therapist in season 6 "I'm ready to get married and I want another kid and I don't want to wait anymore" and they wait for her to be in her late 40s to discuss this? it just doesn't make any sense writing-wise lmao and those lines are from seasons that ASP wrote so she doesn't even have the season 7 excuse.

I totally agree. Emily ended up with the only actually character growth, and that was probably only because they had to do something since the actor who played Richard died, so they needed the character to die as well.

Also, the whole ending with Rory getting pregnant & whatnot some sort of "full circle" made no sense. Lorelai got pregnant as a teenager. Rory was in her 30s so it's completely different.

asp just cannot write characters long term. the 1:1 character mapping of lorelai:rory, luke:jess, chris:logan all in the same doomed fate is so fucking lazyyyyyy.

exactly, she was the only one with a coherent storyline, the rest of them were a total mess.

and that was her original planned ending too which makes even less sense. she wanted Rory to graduate from Yale and then get pregnant at 21 for no reason??

s7 did so much to salvage the sinking ship that was s4-6 (it started veering grossly off-course with rory hooking up with married dean) and actually delivered a satisfying finale. all the revival proves was that ASP should've been taken off the show sooner, tbh.

I like seasons 4-5, but season 6 has terrible writing too and just because the writing isn't as quippy and sharp in season 7 doesn't mean it's any worse than the mess ASP wrote in season 6. I mean, ASP completely wrote the new writers into a corner by having Lorelai sleep with Christopher so what could they do, really? them getting married was a bit dumb but it actually served to provide closure to Lorelai's lingering fantasy that maybe she could have ended up with Christopher. and I don't like Logan but he had such positive character growth in season 7 that she completely threw out. Logan's family begrudgingly accepted Rory by the end. It makes no sense that if Logan actually wanted to be with Rory even after she turned down his proposal, that they wouldn't agree to that. He basically told them to fuck off too so why would he agree to an arranged marriage lmao

ASP is a garbage person and deserves all the ire for her childish embarrassing writing. She kept harping on and on about how media is dying and Rory would struggle to get a job. Ahem no. Just write she's an entitled asshole. I hate the revival so much. I can't watch past S7 of GG anymore.

Rory's job hunt in the revival was so embarrassing lmao, I was actually laughing so hard when she bombed the interview for that website she thought she was too good for

I rewatched the revival recently again and it truly is the worst thing ever created. Everything you mentioned is exactly why the whole thing was absolute GARBAGE and basically an insult to the actual show.

It is just so bad! I rewatch the series quite a bit but I’ve only watched the revival twice and I never will again lol

Everything has already been said about it lol but really the only good parts of the revival were Emily and Emily/Lorelai scenes. Kelly Bishop is so wonderful, as is Lauren. The Rory stuff was so dumb and even though Rory *is* super annoying, it was honestly just insulting to the character to have her turn out that pathetic and dumb. Maybe realistic, but come on. It’s insulting to the character of Lorelai that she would create such an entitled monster after how hard she worked and everything she sacrifice to raise Rory. It’s insulting to the premise of the show that despite all of Lorelai’s efforts her daughter turned out as the type of daughter Emily wanted and then she ends up pregnant by an engaged ex-boyfriend. TLDR ASP’s writing of the revival is insulting to the characters, actors, and the audience!

It was sooooo bad! Oh god I just remembered the episode with the musical. Not to mention the weirdly racist thing of the maid who speaks a language no one can understand. And the extremely fatphobic community pool scene. Like what was the point of any of that?
