On September 22, 2004, Oceanic Flight 815 crashed on a mysterious island that was home to a smoke monster, polar bears, hippie scientists and ancient Egyptians. At the time, it was the most expensive television pilot ever filmed. Over the course of six seasons, the show enthralled and frustrated viewers with its convoluted plot and labyrinthine ( Read more... )

One of the best pilots and one of the worst finales in tv history. That’s quite a feat.

My fav character was Rousseau but only because of the actress Mira Furlan who’s from my country and who I grew up with watching on tv in various Yugoslav tv shows and films. It was amazing to see her career thrive in the US after she was blacklisted in Croatia in the early 90s. She died recently from the West Nile fever. RIP 💔

Can you respond in a spoiler with why you think it was one of the worst series finales in TV history? That is a pretty unpopular take!

Unpopular? Since when? When it first aired it was universally disliked. The reaction was the same as how viewers reacted to GOT’s finale.

Super late to this post so maybe not necessary for a spoiler cut but

[Spoiler (click to open)]I watched the show live when it was airing. They kept saying they’d answer questions and kept audiences that were drifting away by announcing they’d have resolutions/answers to most of the mysteries in the final season. They didn’t. And then right after the finale aired were like “the ending is what it is because it wasn’t about the mysteries at all!!!! It was about relationships!!” Which is not at all what they had been saying the entire time. It was a big f you to fans. I can see how if you are watching it fresh you may enjoy the finale, but there’s a reason why a lot of people that watched it live hated it... )

I can understand that point of view. But what exactly were the unanswered questions?

Honestly, I don’t remember exactly because I haven’t seen it in like 15 years because I’ve been so bitter about the way it played out I haven’t been able to rewatch. I think it’s probably a lot of stuff that maybe in the grand scheme isn’t “important,” but the writers were like “everything will be explained!” I have thought about rewatching but I feel like I’m still not ready lol. I’m sure more was wrapped up than I remember. But I found the ending to be very unsatisfying at the time, and the writers’ attitude about it was off-putting.

I feel like pretty much most stuff was answered. But I definitely understand your dissatisfaction at the ending. It was definitely not my favorite series finale ever. I was OK with it.

I was so sad when I found out she was dead and how she died. Apparently she was not treated well in her career.

She was married to an ethnic Serb and she was working in both Croatian and Serbian theatre when the war broke out. Croatian government pressured her into quitting working in Serbia but she refused so they retaliated by leading a massive smear campaign against her in the media and blacklisting her which led to her fleeing to US with her husband. After her death, Croatian national theatre and several newspapers issued formal apologies for how they treated her in the 90s.

i actually did not care much about season 6 but the finale is great, why did you dislike it?

Because it was a lazy cop out. It was clear for quite some time that the show runners had no idea where they were going with their storylines and that they had no intention of answering any of the mysteries they’ve established.

i also hated the finale. that whole season felt very lazy and rushed. it had some really nice character moments (i always get choked up during the scene of jin and sun "remembering" when they go for their scan) but it just felt like a very meh way to end the show.
