the more I think about it, the more I think Katy Perry’s period of dominance boiled down to sheer dumb luck.

she worked with precisely the right songwriters and precisely the right producers at precisely the right time. her main contribution was providing the Sexy but Silly™️ aesthetic.

but for this album all she’s got is herself, some anonymous songwriters, and a rapist who ran out of ideas 10+ years ago. of course its garbage. and she has only herself to blame 😊

I always thought she was a one-hit wonder who got lucky cause "I Kissed A Girl" wasn't exactly the greatest debut single to start off with.

I think it helps that the 2010s especially early 10s was filled more filler artists and unserious vibes which she fitted in with. But that can only last for so long.

Teenage Dreams has a good tracks but I also remember thinking she's too old for this type of vibe.

Katy's biggest flaw to me was taking way too long to evolve and grow as an artist.

Yeah my read on all this has been that Katy either doesn't realize or can't bring herself to admit that she's too old for the album she's trying to do (in addition to the other problems).

Tbh I think "won't admit" - she gives the vibe of someone terrified of aging.

You hit the nail on the head. Her call;ey party girl persona has played out and she rode that wave way too long. Then it ruined songs like 365 which was the best and probably the only song I can stand to listen to.

She definitely got lucky and I knew she had no lasting power. I wish she understood that.

She was literally just a shiny vessel for the writer/producer duo of the moment - that's what happens when you sell your soul and artistic vision for the quick coin - her music is as deep as a pauly shore movie and that's why she is so "disposable" - the gag is she thought dr. luke would bring her back to pop stardom when he totally sabotaged her by giving us this dated boring mess - if she has taken an actual risk and worked with a bunch of new up and coming producers and writers, she may have actually had a shot. but greed > all else

Please excuse me while I have opinions no one asked for, but you've posed an interesting thought that I must expound on. Haha. In my opinion, Katy was a largely talentless star vehicle (with a sort of interesting timbre, a plus for a radio star, which of course labels were still looking for in the later 2000's) for the label they could easily make money off of and after the 80s-90s superstar-athon, that's exactly what labels are looking for. Capitol records could throw her with the right team, make a bunch of money, and then when she started having opinions, wanting to change her sound, and asking for more money, they could just drop her down to b-list on their roster knowing full well that she'll flounder without said a-list team and support. Then she'd try to make more albums, but then they'd flop without the team and she'd start going into debt, which would mean she'd either have to try and release hits to get out of debt or she'd have to pay the buyout on her contract (which is surely enormous). Unlike most artists, she likely ( ... )

I read your whole comment and at the end, I was wondering what's Miracle Whip did. Is it similar to Guinness signing a 9000 years lease?

Then, it hit me. Despite the fact, I thought his older hits and him are still quite popular with some people.

The first part of your comments matched some people's thoughts with Kpop artists. Companies don't want a star who will shine above all else, who can write, produce, etc., or they don't want to support their talents' development. They don't want talents who have a lot of negotiable power. They want people who depend on the company and can't do much else if they leave because they were never trained to develop their talents.

LOL! Yes, I just can't bear to call Mustin Mayo, mayo just doesn't deserve that slander so I stick with Miracle Whip. He seriously got clowned on that price. I think he should have gotten at least 150 million. While I think Bieber and Katy were way over valued at 200 Million ( ... )

i agree her label was the primary factor driving her success, when i say “luck” its partly in reference to the label choosing her for that particular team when they they could have picked any pretty young singer.

and i think youre totally right about labels actually preferring the katy types bc they’re so much easier to control and discard. i hadnt thought about it but it makes total sense.

meanwhile her contemporaries- Gaga, Beyonce, Taylor - are clearly the authors behind their own careers. love them or hate them, those women had an actual vision and its the reason they were able to stick around.

Yes! I completely agree in that way she was very very lucky. She really could have been passed over for just about anyone else. What she offers really is a dime a dozen and I'd argue that nowdays if she were 20 years old again looking for a record deal, I don't think she'd get picked because her timbre would be less valued now and she's missing important elements that the other big popstars have now (for instance, she absolutely cannot be trained to use Social media well... like, at all lol). Gaga, Beyonce, Taylor, I'd also add Adele to that mix - Them making it through this system and coming out the other side is remarkably impressive. And like you say, part of that is because they had the vision and they were self-sufficient. With or without a label, all those women would have eventually found success in some way. They don't need the machine, they are their own machine.
