That’s sad :/ It’s also the type of thing I remind myself any time I get sad about being an only child. You aren’t guaranteed happy relationships with siblings.

I remember someone on here said that there is no obligation to maintain your relationship with your family as an adult. And a lot of people here agreed.
It makes me sad but it's true. Like happens, people drift. People have different priorities

As someone close to one sibling and estranged from the other, AND a parent of a kid likely to be an only child, I think about this often. I have complicated feelings about not having another, but at this point my job is to teach my child how to build a community around him that is as strong and supportive and generous as family is touted to be (and the opposite of the experience I personally had).

My mom is the eldest of 6, and she’s always like “Thank God you won’t have to deal with any of these problems” anything there’s discord among the 6.

I bet that’s rough too. I hear horror stories about older siblings who end up fighting over family wills/trusts/etc.. That can’t be fun.

I love being an only child and some of my friends make me wish I had a siblings while others make me wonder how they managed to not kill their own lol

Only child here, married into a family with strained sibling relationships. Sometimes it’s needed. My partner put up with so much for long, I couldn’t understand why anyone would tolerate this kind bullshit.

I went to a lot of therapy to help navigate our situation, and the best advice I got was “if you wouldn’t tolerate this behaviour from a friend, a coworker, a stranger…then why would you tolerate it from family?”

Hell yeah! If anything, family should be held to a higher standard. So many take advantage of family, thinking that the relationship is a given guarantee, but that's such a shitty way of looking at the people who you expect to have your back.

Definitely. People seem to think of blood ties as being some magical glue, and they're just not. There is no guarantee that simply because you're born into the same household that you have compatible personalities
