If you are compelled by this there is also an AMAZING documentary called The Woman Who Wasn't There about a woman who faked being in the towers and surviving 9/11. It's crazy.

I really want to watch this but I watched the Towers fall on TV in real-time and it gives me vicious anxiety to watch old footage. Is there a good book about it?

Not that i am aware of, the woman's name is Tania Head if you wanted to look it up, but she definitely coopted a lot of the traumatic stories so it is very triggering.

Thanks so much for the warning. In retrospect, I developed a lot of vicarious trauma around that day and an adult for SURE should have turned the channel. I'll avoid this one and see if there's a long-form or a book.

The Casefile podcast covered the case in a recent episode (Case 286: The Survivors’ Network), in case you’re into podcasts.

I was just going to comment how much this case reminded me of that one. And not quite the same, but I also associate it with that one PostSecret submission where the person claimed they let everyone believe they died in 9/11 so they could disappear and start a new life.

I'm morbidly curious about this, but like tigermilk said, the footage of 9/11 is triggering. Is there a LOT of footage, that i can maybe skip through it?

It's been a few years since I last watched it but there is definitely a lot of dialogue about the events, I don't recall too much footage, they do a lot of stylized (cartoon) reenactments but a majority of the interviews are with actual survivors and they do tell their stories and you do hear about people not surviving. it really is incredibly fascinating though.

I've seen that one! It's truly wild, especially because she didn't do it for money at all. Like, she actually LOST money bc she donated to whatever fund for survivors she was involved with. Not that that makes it OK at all, but it's fascinating to me that someone could be so desperate for attention and affection/a sense of community.
