I mean, you can love your abuser, sure, but you should also spend all your energy trying to get away from people who would, given the chance, hurt you, and hurt those you claim to care about.

I agree but I think it’s more complicated than some people want to acknowledge. I mean I go to certain family functions so I can see my nieces and nephews and good family members. I can’t control that my parents will also be there. I don’t tolerate their shit or let them say ignorant things around me but it’s hard to realistically fully cut them off and see the rest of my family. I also try to be civil so as to not have constant drama or disruptive scenes. I’m sure some people will see that as complicity.

That said, I wouldn’t say I have empathy for them lol. I mean I guess as abused people but not as conservatives.

Right. My parents are not the smartest people in the world and are not having the best political views, but not everything in life is black and white. Sure I can stop being a fan of pop singer if she has shitty views, but I can not really disown my whole family. I call them on their shit and try to correct them much as possible. My dad passed away recently and nothing really mattered, not his political views, life philosophy, etc. Humans are complicated. Ofc if they were mean people that were pushing their political narrative and being fucking ashsoles I would cut them off maybe, but them being dumbass is not really reason to disown them.

I mean I would definitely not have a relationship if it were more conducive. My parents aren’t just dumb conservatives, they abused me. It’s complicated for my siblings and I because we were raised to not talk about our feelings (a way my parents protected themselves). We were also abused in different ways.

I did leave for a long time and cut off contact as much as I could but I ultimately suffered the most because I was losing my other family members. It’s very hard and there are straight up times I fantasize that my parents will just die. For now though I just grit my teeth so I can know my nieces and nephews and maintain a healthy relationship with my siblings (as much as I can - also complicated).

My friend had a different situation than yours but both of his parents died within two years of each other. He never came right out and said that it was a relief that they were gone but I definitely saw the difference in him afterward. His life was so much easier in multiple ways after they died. He was also much less stressed due to not having to deal with that very complicated situation anymore. I hope you can hang in there for now so that you can maintain relationships with your nieces and nephews.
