It’s only 8 episodes so I will probably finish the season. So far it is like a typical reality show aka drama within a friend group so I’d say it’s comparable to a typical Real Housewives show with a younger cast. In the first episode alone, there was a recap of the swinger scandal, an unplanned pregnancy, an arrest, a member of the friend group who moved out of state (and seemed to have ghosted everyone when she left) returning unexpectedly, and a lot of shit talking.
I would say it’s not campy so far and because none of these women seem to have left the church or been ex-communicated, they aren’t being critical of the religion itself BUT they have already made remarks about how conservative the culture is and how they are trying to change things. They aren’t nearly as blunt or critical about the church as Heather and Whitney have been but I guess at least they’re addressing some aspects of it.
As with many shows about religious groups, some of the critical lens comes from the editors who let the participants’ words and actions show the audience the issues that arise from being part of a conservative religious group. These women have some awareness about the negative aspects of being raised in this culture/church but not to the extent that an outsider (like the editors/audience) see.
