I just still can't get over this being two films... the second half of the stage show is so much weaker than the first, and now it's twice the length?

I wish we got a book adaptation instead because it's so much more thematically complex than the Broadway show. The whole thing with "animals" vs "Animals" alone... There's also way more content to mine from for the school years in the books.

I'm so sad we'll probably never get a proper adaptation of the book. The relationships that the characters developed at school really stuck with me. It does kind of look like in one trailer that Boq/Fiyero/Glinda/Nessa/Elphaba do hang out a bit, so maybe they're adding a bit of it but...

It's a very dense book so it's okay that you didn't pick it up. Only theater nerds in my school read it.

That's still where I am on it. Because it genuinely doesn't look bad. I think casting could have been better, but it looks fine and I think people will see it. But why are we cutting this show in half? It's so unnecessary and like you said, act 2 is so much weaker.
