No,she couldn't get insured like RDJ when her drug history was revealed after her conviction.
That arrest probably saved her life.
Ryder had eight different prescription painkillers on her at the time of her shoplifting arrest.
the 31-year-old actress had received prescription painkillers from 20 different doctors in the last six years, some under her alias Emily Thompson.

Don't be sorry or put yourself down for not knowing something
Woman are punished more harshly than men.
I hate how Drew Barrymore still has to talk about a teenaged drug problem.
Let's not even talk about Black stars.
The media was so loud on a famous actress stealing clothes, that her drug problem went under the radar.

The doctor I think later got his medical license revoked. She never gives details about why she did what she did but I notice she never seems to regret it either. It always came off to me as a cry for help when I later looked at it more.

That's one theory.
This is another.
It would appear that the defendant is addicted to pain medication and may possibly be shoplifting in order to obtain quick cash in order to not leave a ‘paper trail’ and/or also felt that a concerned individual is monitoring the defendant’s spending habits, because they may be aware of defendant’s drug usage.”

Who's the alleged concerned individual monitoring her spending habits?

They would pay with credit cards
Credit cards that every month a paper statement is mailed.
She was using aliases for different Drs.
The other option of the concerned person is probably someone that has access to her financial records.
All of this was alleged, but she did have a syringe along with those 8 drugs.
We can watch any documentary on addicts to know what they will do to get more
Luckily she got a second chance before tragedy struck.

The court of public opinion is harsher when you air out your problems and bring the public into it.
But also I've always suspected that Winona intentionally self-sabotage herself and it was a cry for help. Because she had been expressing depression and anxiety over her fame in previous interviews but everyone would always shut her down by saying "DO YOU KNOW HOW MANY PEOPLE/ACTORS WOULD LOVE TO BE IN YOUR POSITION!! HAVE YOUR CAREER!!" so while not exactly the greatest way to force a pause....she wanted that pause in her life.
Plus her doctor was later ruled to be something of a quack cause he was also prescribing meds she didn't need and probably exacerbates her personal issues.
