I just saw a job posting for an admin at Netflix and the rate of pay is $60k-240k there’s no bonuses and your rate of pay is dependent on stock options. Given that knowledge it feels very The Producers that they’re cancelling all their shows.

your rate of pay is dependent on stock options

is this an actual thing real companies do or is it just the ones funded by venture capitalists?

I'm not trying to be a dick because I think this person is well intentioned, but no that's not a thing and that's not how stock options work.

Stock options are definitely part of your overall compensation but your company has to either be bought out or go public to realize any value on options, and even then it depends on the vesting schedule.

Stock options in absolutely no way influence your pay rate.

Not entirely true. One job I had, I was offered three different salaries. 80, 90, or 100k and then the stock options varied (more for 80k, less for 100k)

I would be so fascinated to see all the details here. On a surface level, it sounds like they were swindling you to take a lower pay on the potential but no promise of a highly successful company.

But, yes, you're right that companies can use it as a batering point for wages due to something most people are (understandably) not well versed on.

You def have to be certain that the company is going somewhere - I took the 100k* and didn’t bother buying out my options when I left lol. But another start up I was at, some of my friends took the risk when they joined and they were early employees and their stock ended up paying off in terms of how much they got and that the company did go public

This is a thing; your base pay is higher if you take less stock options and vice versa

Netflix has an option for bonuses but if you see a range, that is cash, base pay. How do I know? I'm interviewing with them currently.
