Sure, they may not like each other understandably so, but they truly have a lot in common:
- Both born in 1969 in New York.
- Both Latinas
- Both are rags-to-riches stories
- Both had narcissistic mothers who didn't support them to follow their dreams. Mariah's mom was a trained opera singer who couldn't make it after having three kids. Jen's mom wanted to be an entertainer and loved musicals/dances, and she didn't want Jen to follow that same dream. It's telling both moms didn't want their daughters to pursue the same dreams that they had.
- Both have 2 siblings, except Mariah is the youngest of the three. Jen is the middle child. Mariah is estranged from her two siblings because they would want money from her and would try to smear her. Jen is close with her sisters but grew up proving herself and competing with them because she had middle child syndrome.
- Both parents were separated, and you can see the generational patterns with the impact of having a narcissistic mother and an unavailable father in their romantic relationships: Mariah married Tommy Mottola and Nick Cannon, and she was engaged to James Packer. I think everyone knows Jen's history by now. They both survived abusive relationships with men.
- Both have this reputation for being divas, but Mariah plays along with it and makes it a joke or running gag that she's out of touch and is unrelatable, even though girl sang about being poor and not having much as a child during the holidays and even sharing an apartment and sharing canned goods with her roommates to survive. Jen tries to be relatable, but it's unrealistic because she's not really the same girl she was before financially, but she may be the same girl at heart.
- Both had fraternal twins with shitty fathers who are deadbeat and are having kids all over the place with other women.
- Both have a thing for the R&B genre, and they both have a connection or affiliation with Tommy Mottola in different ways in the industry.
- Mariah sings about breakups and unrequited love, yet Jen tends to sing about love and the more positive side of it.
- There's American Idol, their residencies, and other similarities.
I wrote about Jen's childhood complex trauma history here:
