Not only that: The fibres are often covered in preservatives, excess dye residue, (machine) oil residue and other chemicals from production, hence that distinct factory smell. Sometimes even pesticides (for transport and storage). Idg people who wear mass-produced clothes straight off the rack, unless it's an emergency D:

I always wash new clothes before I wear them, mostly because of the smell. But also because of the dye & sizing (or whatever that is).

I know several men who don't wash new underwear (from those bagged multipacks) first, their thought process being that it's clean since it was wrapped. And then you get physical and all is fine, until they take their trousers off and all I can smell is that overpowering chemical smell, suddenly amplified by the body heat and moisture. It sticks to their skin too 🥴

I always wash my clothes before wearing them for all of those reasons. But since COVID, there's the added bonus of not knowing if someone sneezed or coughed on this five minutes before I picked it up.
