If you ever wanna troll a Quaker, just remind them that Nixon was a Quaker.

I've worked in two majority Quaker workplaces and most of them are THE WORST....they think they're above you, and so insufferable and militant.

Quakers also invented and enforced the modern prison system, and forced isolation for every prisoner all day so that they could spend all that time praying and speaking to god about what they did. They also believed that interaction was bad for prisoners because prison is about saving your soul by communion with god, so they made silence and isolation the mainstays of prison. You were not to connect with each other, only with god.

And ofc none of this is humane. And the Quakers I worked with were also obsessed with so many performative SJW issues...lawn signs but not actually helping via mutual aid, donating money but not actually knowing your neighbor, they're that person who identifies their politics as "progressive" (could they please be more vague?) and they still send tons of missionaries all over Eastern Eurpope, Africa, the Balkans, and South America to convert people.

Damn, sorry, Nixon makes me so mad.

have you read nixonland? it's super engaging for a non-fiction book with heavy citations that's like 800 pages long

Omg that sounds right up my alley, as a hater of Nixon, a hardcore admirer and lover of Martha Mitchell 💜, and a hater of many quakers! 😆 Thank you - I just requested it at the library.

I loved the book The Fifties and it was like that too! It says it was 1216 pages but I swear the bibliography was a tome all on its own with some great info.

I've gotten back into sewing vintage patterns and embroidering thrifted clothes, and I'm doing Martha Mitchell's bright red phone on the back of a white camp shirt, with a cigarette (might sequin the outline of some cigarette smoke). And either her name or "Martha was right" or idk....something worthy of her.
