Maybe because they are so far out from the nearest livable planet, the powers that be know they cant really get far without freezers (hence, the plot of them needing those freezers).
Also, how exactly do people luck out and get stuck on this rock? At least in Aliens, they imply they are sent there to setup a new colony (and its presumed they colonize other planets as well to set up shop). But how did people end up on this mining planet to begin with? The promise of big wages? I mean, the crew of the Nostromo fly across the galaxy to mine an ore mineral to take back to earth, so i reckon the need for precious minerals is very important.
But also....if a WeyYu space station was taken over like that, wouldn't the company want to destroy the station themselves? Why let it float around in space for others to potentially stumble upon?? Even if it was a top secret, need-to-know thing, it just seems odd. I forget what the timeline is from the point of the station being overrun to the kids arriving onto it.

The way the movie started, with similar outfits to the salvage team at the opening of Aliens, i was expecting the movie to be about a salvage team who goes around collecting scrap and stuff, and the movie would end with them finding Ripleys escape pod.

I left you an essay reply back on that premiere post lmao (which I have linked for anyone who wants to see my ramblings about how fucking stupid Prometheus made the series, even if after a rewatch I came to appreciate it more - and I like Covenant more, so sue me, r/lv426)
