He was so beautiful. I wonder what career he'd have today, he was so talented.

he'd have Leo's career

I don't think so because they were at way different places in their careers. There would have been some crossovers with stuff like The Beach or The Aviator, but River wouldn't have done Romeo* or Jack Dawson. To be honest, I think Leo is miscast in most of his movies, though.

* Unless he was Juliet opposite Keanu's Romeo. Somewhere across Spatium et Tempus, this exists.

a lot of ppl said that he'd been Cameron's original choice for Jack, in the early days of the project

i'm not surprised and river would've fucking aced it, especially with kate (unlike some of the others up for the role like matthew mcconaughy) but alas

river was actually in the minds of various casting directors for roles that ended up going to leo

The one I remember is The Basketball Diaries.

I always thought he'd either eventually quit acting or act a lot less and only act when the right script would come along, like DDL. I figured eventually acting would take a back seat to either his music or work for raising awareness for environmental concerns or animal cruelty.

I don’t think he’d have Leo’s career but I think Leo’s might have been slightly different (I know Leo ended up getting roles that were at first meant for River, but he had also already done Gilbert Grape at that point, so it’s not like he was a complete unknown before landing the eclipse.).

I’m more inclined to agree with the user who said he’d eventually quit and/or go the DDL route.

But i think he and Keanu would have probably ended up cowriting and starring in a few movies together.

i think he'd have leo's career (if not more, because he'd deserve it, he was a better actor than leo) but take bigger and more interesting risks than he did, and not be obsessed with oscar baits. and like you said, he'd probably work with keanu again so i wonder if he would've gotten a juicy role in the matrix movies, for example.

From reading the quotes his sister shared, I think he’d move toward producing/directing documentaries with a focus on environmentalism and/or marginalized communities. He’d still act from time to time but mostly to pay for his other passions.

And I’m sure he’d get arrested at a protest or two.
