i understand that sometimes rescues don't work out for families for a variety of reasons but this feels like it's more on her than anything else. why did she leave them out where the dog could get them? why not just get new ones (they have the money) and train the dog?

when i got my rescue dog she chewed through the curtains my mom handmade. my mom was furious obviously but we never once considered getting rid of my dog. we just tried to train her not to do that (but tbh i think it was an anxiety thing since she was rescued from a horrible situation).

She says it was during covid so beside the cost, it was a mess cause she was gonna take her daughters to go see their dad in England. So she blames the dog for her kids not being able to see their dad for 4 months.

Granted maybe don't leave your purse on the ground where the dog can reach it easily.

I have spent so much money on my dog and fixing/replacing things he’s chewed. He pulled my curtains off the wall and took out a chunk of plasterboard with them. He’s chewed my TV remote. He’s chewed the sofa. He’s tried to chew electrical wires. He’s chewed plants in my garden. He tries to chew rocks (he’s dumb AF). He chases my cats because he wants to play with them. He has tantrums on walks and flops around biting at me like a shark on a fishing line. He’s head butted me by accident like a million times. I’ve been covered in bruises from him ( ... )

What breed/age is your dog?

Rhodesian Ridgeback, and 10 months. So he’s 110+ lb of teenage chaos at the moment 🤣 plus they’re known for being kind of stubborn/not eager to please so training through this hormonal stage has been a challenge.

Ooo those are beautiful dogs - I actually just learned about that breed for the first time the other week! I’ve been doing some dog breed research for when I have the space to get my own dog. One of the breeds I was interested in were Basenji’s but I’ve heard people say they can be really destructive so that’s why your comment piqued my interest. Yeah, 10 months is prime time crazy puppy antics for sure plus with him being a large breed oof I’ve been there!

My family’s GSD as a puppy would run out the doggy door with our shoes or the TV remote and have us chase him in circles before he gave it up. And then he would chew on the legs of furniture and stuff his mouth with woodchips it drove me up a wall! He’s older now and has significantly mellowed out but I do look back at those memories with some fondness in retrospect lmao

Yeah he's gorgeous and so full of love, but also so full of teeth and stubborness and a complete lack of focus lol

oh boy, lol. My sister’s BFF has had two of those and they’re both nuts. I’ve dog-sat for her a few times and the bedtime ritual involves the dog getting a piece of brie! Also they both refused to walk with me when I tried and wouldn’t go out to pee if there was a tiny drizzle, lol.

Lmao wtf 🤣🤣🤣 my guy loves cheese but we think he might have a dairy allergy, so he can’t have any now. Luckily he goes to bed pretty easily. But yes the rain thing is real - they hate wet weather!

Damn - I adore Rhodesian Ridgebacks! My friend has rescued them for the last 40 years and always has at least 2 but often 4 at a time (she lives on a farm). Hands down, every male is the goofiest dog I've ever met. The females are demure and mindful but the males are just great big goofballs, in my experience. Also, the females were the real hunters in the family. Enjoy! You made a great choice (which granted, you may not believe while your boy is still a teenager - LOL!).

Yeah I’m sure he’ll be a great dog when he’s aged out of this teenage chaos. But it can last until they’re 2 apparently! Got another year of madness to get through 🤪

My dogs are 3 and 4 now and I often think how much nicer it is now that I don't have to worry about them chewing random shit
