My theater isn't playing anything new this weekend, and Blink Twice isn't interesting me enough to drive 15 miles to the next theater.

Let's see what I watched this week:

Anyone But You: ⭐⭐

Immaculate: ⭐⭐⭐

AI Artificial Intelligence (rewatch): ⭐⭐⭐⭐

The Addams Family (rewatch): ⭐⭐⭐⭐

The Lost Boys (rewatch): ⭐⭐⭐⭐

Prometheus (rewatch): ⭐⭐⭐1/2

Alien: Covenant: ⭐⭐⭐⭐ (lmao r/lv426 has a bounty on my head now for this)

Beetlejuice (rewatch for obvs reasons): ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Incendies: ⭐⭐⭐⭐

Oddity: ⭐⭐⭐⭐1/2 (what an under the radar horror gem)

The Handmaiden: ⭐⭐⭐⭐1/2 (idk why it took me 8 years to watch this because DAMN)

also if anyone is on letterboxd, you can find me there - https://letterboxd.com/squirrelsohno

i'm so happy that people have come around on the handmaiden and that it's (for the most part) considered a masterpiece nowadays... i remember some of us were fighting for our lives when it first came out lol, so many people wanted to dismiss it bc it was made by park chan wook.

I think since I've read the book and knew the plot going in, the surprises were spoiled for me which was a letdown, but I still really enjoyed it. I just wonder if they fact that it's VERY graphic in those very detailed sex (Me during the movie: Oh, so that's how that works...) scenes - and Sapphic, to boot - is what caused it to be ignored by awards types.

i blamed south korea for not submitting it for the oscars bc i always felt like it would have been a shoo-in... but decision to leave was submitted years later and that was snubbed when i thought it would be a nom shoo-in too... so maybe oscar voters in particular aren't in love with park chan wook lol.

https://www.reddit.com/r/YMS/comments/5t0d7m/why_did_south_korea_not_choose_the_handmaiden_for/ This thread says he was blacklisted (at least for a few years) after the Sewol disaster because he criticized the government. But who knows, I think it was probably a mix of things (I would suspect the fact it was very gay didn't help given that SK is still fairly conservative socially).
