literally it used to be a normal word for people to use

if it was said in the last 6 or so years it'd be different

I mean, so did using the r-slur and calling things you didn’t like gay, but that didn’t make it ok then either. I’m the same age as Blake and was raised in a fairly conservative, small town in Pennsylvania and still knew these words were not appropriate.

it was a catchphrase on drag race or whatever show iirc “hot txxx mess.”

kind of wild how far along we’ve come to make certain words unacceptable to use.

I think it was a contestant on Project Runway that had that catchphrase. I believe he apologized for saying it.

It was Christian Siriano, and yep he did.

people just casually used to throw around the r-word, calling something gay to imply it’s bad, etc. elementary school in the 90s my peers all did this. it was a small town with very insular conservative backwards thinking. it was never ok imo, but somehow it was just accepted then?

i was always picked on for various things growing up and this was just another thing to be picked on for. for fighting back and saying gay isn’t bad, don’t call people or things the r-word. but that was just me, the fat native kid in an all white school Being Weird again for telling people to shove it for being dicks.

ohh i misunderstood your comment at first. yeah ia. i remember people saying "op is a f-slur" on reddit ALL the time as the top comment a decade ago and i would always reply and tell them not to be homophobic, and i'd get massive downvoted and a whole slew of replies telling me that it's not homophobic (?!). it's funny how just a few years later it's not tolerated anymore. like where were you guys before?!

i did have a weird period in high school though where i was I am Very Smart and argued that words should not be off limits. real edgelord shit. makes me cringe thinking about it.

people have been back to saying the r-word, i've noticed. i wouldn't be surprised if other slurs make a comeback too.

Because they still like saying and can't understand why they can't.

You know, as much as I'd like to think that's true... I just have seen an uptick on social media of people using all sorts of slurs. A lot of them in different countries. So I dunno if maybe that's skewing things, but it's appalling how rampant it is and how it's not being filtered. Yet, when I make a comment talking about science, the spambots flag them for auto-deletion without review. Like tf???

SM mod bots on FB are useless. if you comment on a celeb page/band page/author/etc i get inundated with “likes” from “Veruca Salt private messaging” page or “Father Nathan Monk DMs open” page. I report them as imposters but they don’t go against community standards 🥴🤡

my friends profile was recently hacked and he is still fighting to try and get back control of his own profile. ridiculous

Yeah, I remember Christian Siriano used it as a catchphrase all the time back on Project Runway. Not saying it was good she kept throwing the word around and I have not been on her side at all for this press tour, but that was a word everyone was using very loosely back then. If we're calling her out for it, then we should be calling everyone out for it.
