Ugh, same! I'm flying to Japan by Air Canada later this year and I thought I paid a lot for the tickets lmao. Now I'm trying to figure out hotels and it's honestly more of a nightmare. Are you going solo or with a group?

i'm going with a friend so it's just the two of us. we did all of our hotel bookings a few months in advance because i knew hotels would get snatched up the later we waited. i'm going in september but i started looking for hotels around feb/march and a whole bunch were already snatched up so i can't imagine looking now...

I hope you and your friend have fun! I still have 3 more months until my trip so there are some options left but it's limited. It's hard to believe that you looked for hotels almost half a year in advance and some were already fully booked. Next time I'll book the hotels first before buying the tickets.

thanks! best of luck to you on looking for accommodation!

yeah i had coworkers/friends that went back in 2023 and it was already hard for them to book stuff. the demand of travelling to japan coinciding with the low yen is great in some aspects but also makes planning things a lot less flexible. there were some hotels that were recommended to me in the shinjuku area that were quite cheap at first back in late 2023, but when i went to look again in feb/march the prices went up so much. i couldn't justify the price hikes so i settled with a hotel within budget, but it was slightly out of the main areas of tokyo, still got lucky with getting a hotel near a JR line station tho! the options are still out there if you really look, but you'll probably have to compromise convenience over price tho

Thanks! I just found a good deal and booked a hotel for 2 nights in Kyoto near the JR line station. Now I'm praying that the one ryokan in Tokyo I requested comes through. I would love to hear your feedback and any tips you picked up after your trip if we bump into each other on here again!

I usually look for hotels in Japan 6 months before my trip, and they're typically free cancellations up until the day before my stay. Then I do a review 3 months before to see if there are any better deals, or if hotels that previously were not open for booking are available by then. I find it a lot less stressful that way. I also find that aggregator sites like Booking.com not as cheap any more these days, so I look at options on that site, then go directly to the hotel sites to compare pricing. My trip in Nov last year and upcoming trip next month are a 50/50 mix of aggregator + hotel site bookings ( ... )

Thank you for the helpful tips! I'm still revising my itinerary as I have family in Japan and I need to confirm if they can host. At the moment it's Tokyo - Osaka - Himeji - ??? - Kyoto - Tokyo, which is a lot of trains lol. I really need to factor in domestic travel costs.

Nice Henin profile pic btw! No one in the WTA hits the 1HBH quite like her anymore.

Fingers crossed that they can host you! Love the general direction your itinerary is - that was pretty much how my first trip to Japan went. I revisit those places fairly often, because it changes all the time! I haven't been to Tokyo as often as I have been to Osaka, but this upcoming trip of mine will have me skip Osaka/Kyoto entirely for the first time in, uh... 7? trips? I've lost count. But I'm looking forward to going to Hokkaido for the first time, and spending a bit more time venturing about in Tokyo. I've not been to any of the museums/art galleries there yet, nor have I been to the Roppongi area lol.

I refuse to let go of my Henin profile pics, thank you for the compliment! I miss her and her style of play so much. T_T

Thank you! Do you mind if I DM you to ask about Osaka and any other related questions about your experience in Japan? I'm not too familiar with the city, but would love to know any hidden gems you've encountered on your trips! Really appreciate all the advice <3

And yes Henin was a revelation! I miss her too on the tour =(
