August 18, 2024 In news that should surprise no one, Alien: Romulus has scared its way up all the way to the number one slot this week with a decent 41.5 million take. This is the second highest B.O. start in the long running series, as it also collected $66.7 million at the international box office for a global start of $108.2 million. The movie has been well received by critics (it holds an 82% “fresh” rating on Rotten Tomatoes) and audiences (who awarded the film a “B+” grade on CinemaScore). H.R. Giger would be proud.
Here's an older work of Giger's that impressed Ridley Scott so much it inspired him to approach Giger about designing the creatures for Alien.
5: Everything old is new again, and people are here for rereleases. A 15th-anniversary re-release of “Coraline,” Laika’s beloved stop-motion animation fantasy film, takes the 5th slot with $8.9 million from 1,535 venues. It has grossed roughly $11.3 million since returning to theaters on Thursday.
4: Disaster film Twisters has spun its way into 4th place this week, grossing $9.8 million from 3,483 locations in its fifth weekend in theaters and dropping just 35% from last week. Being available for VOD this week really didn't hurt tickets sales that much, and so far it's grossed a very healthy $238.4 million in North America and $333.4 million worldwide.
3: Dropping its box office take in half, "It Ends With Us" sails happily into the third slot this week, and is nearing the $100 million mark domestically with $97.7 million to date. Globally, “It Ends With Us” has earned $180 million after only 10 days of release, which isn't chump change.
2: In other news that should also surprise no one, “Deadpool & Wolverine” made a respectful 29 million this week, securing its second place ranking. Even with a 46% dip this week its still earned a mammoth $545.8 million in North America and $596.8 million internationally to date.
