i had a coworker who once said about another coworker "hey, don't you think X looks like a monkey?" and when we literally remained in silence she added "I was just joking!" and another coworker told her "There was nothing funny about that." and the reply was "Well, it's not like he could hear me!"
To add: I went out on lunch break a few times with her, and I kid you not, every time she saw someone she knew, the second they were out of earshot, she would either stop saying what she was talking about or interrupt whoever was talking, to gossip about them (most of the times it was just about their looks).

And here comes a happy ending, luckily we then ended up working in different teams and on her last day, I saw when she left and... boy, have I never seen a colder "goodbye" from ANYONE. Like, even her new team leader tried to sneak away (the asshole was working only half a day), i know it was during the pandemic so it was even less of a chance of goodbye hugs and kisses, but when I tell you that people wouldn't even walk her to the door, they just lifted a hand and said "Bye, good luck!" All of this, after she spent her last week bringing snacks, cakes, croissant for breakfast and pizza for lunch almost every day (and then never bothered to clean away the empty boxes).

PS: do not feel bad for her, she was the type of worker who'd spent more time buttering up to the team leader in order to become their assistant and delegate her work onto others instead of actually doing her work.
