Tim Sweeney Says Many Epic Games Store Exclusivity Deals "Were Not Good Investments"

August 16, 2024 - North Carolina's second richest man says exclusivity deals lost Epic Games (creators of Fortnite and Unreal Engine) money and were not a good investment for the company
- The biggest draw to the Epic Games Store has been weekly free games, which Tim Sweeney says has brought in users at a far cheaper rate than Google or Facebook ads; in 2022, almost 700 million free games were claimed
- Biggest exclusivity agreement as of late was probably Alan Wake 2; according to Finnish developer Remedy it has yet to make any profit or earn back its development costs despite being one of the biggest games of 2023 (OP note: I still think Epic Games thought it was funny since they're headquartered in Wake County); it's become more popular as Epic Games puts it on sale and DLCs arrive
- Fortnite and Unreal Engine are still by far the biggest money-makers for the company versus publishing or the Epic Games Store
- IDK, maybe buying a mall and razing it to build a new headquarters and e-sports destination and then kind of abandoning it was also not a great investment? Just the OP's comments about what their spending strategy says about them...

Click here for a Reddit post about all of Epic Games exclusive games (as of 8 months ago); tbh I've only heard of a handful of them.
SOURCE 2 3In related news, apparently Control 2 is now in a playable state in case you prefer that to Alan Wake and the Control crossover appearances in the DLC aren't tiding you over LMAO.
