Zoë Kravitz Says Something Stupid (again)

Zoë Kravitz says that she does not shy away from still appreciating would-be canceled directors’ films, including Roman Polanski.

“It’s OK that somebody bad was involved in something good. What are we supposed to do, get rid of America?” https://t.co/yHJrui1UuS pic.twitter.com/tt3zldxPIM

I get the argument of separating the art from the artist. But you can’t disregard the actions of a pedophile because they made a movie you liked.

Plus there is also a scale of sorts of what you’re willing look past, and drugging and raping a child should be on the “oh no, fuck that guy and his movies” end of the scale.

I get that as well. I can only do that with very, very, very few people (separate the art from the artist). And they have to be like, an asshole or something. Not abuse or worse!

People like Marilyn Manson, Michael Jackson and others who have done similar shit that I was MASSIVE fans of? Dead. And Gone.

Not a fucking chance!

I never liked Allen or Polanski, so 🤷

EDIT: Jackson and Manson were the only 2 I could think of right now. There are more.

I was raised on rock music, Aerosmith, Motley Crew, Bowie, the Stones, etc. So my whole musical upbringing is nothing but gross creeps and rapists.

Yeahhh... I like a lot of old rock, too! Aerosmith, RHCP, and others.

I get it.

Hearing about their underage (literally 13 year old girls sometimes!) is vile. No way around it.

Right. Buffy is my all time favorite TV show; it got me through so much as an adolescent closeted gay kid in the South.

But I will absolutely acknowledge and call out that Joss Whedon deserved his reckoning. A lot of great and talented people (besides Joss) made that show great, but I can't deny that Joss was a pivotal part of the show's success, and it would not have been what it was without his insights and vision.

Talented people are capable of doing bad things and we can't let people off the hook just because they made something we love.

When discussing a pop culture work's legacy - the conversation needs to be nuanced and include all of the above (for a lack of better words... the good, the bad, and the ugly) lol.

I've had this conversation with friends but think of Woody Allen's work, I'm sorry his dna is embedded in his films. You can't separate the art from the artist.

Luc Besson? Stanley Kubrick? Their work always has their subconscious in their films.

I can separate the art from the artist if their work is accounting.

his dna is embedded in his films.

I think this is true of most filmmakers, especially pedantic, self-referential ones like Woody. It makes them more fascinating on rewatch but no less disturbing.

With Woody Allen, that's true about quite a few of movies.

I did like some of his movies where he wasn't in it- like September or Purple Rose of Cairo. But I haven't been able to watch since I learned about who he is.

Chinatown has a whole subplot about incestual abuse (and this is the crux of the film's "twist").

A lot of these sicko men's perversions bleed into their work whether or not they consciously intend it. Now of course that doesn't mean artist who tells these stories MUST BE an abuser or sicko themselves, but it is interesting when we get into that "separate the art from the artist" conversation because the artist informs the art.

Tess has a rape scene in it too.... between a young girl and older male. I love that book so I own his movie, but jfc it's a scene I look away from when it pops up.

It's a shame this beautiful movie was made by him... and he only made it because Sharon Tate loved it - it was his first movie after the Murders.

This. People will sometimes give me shit for not being able to ~separate the art from the artist~ when I say I can't listen to Michael Jackson's music anymore but they sure shut up real fast when I tell them I'm a csa survivor.
