I am forever a believer of the 'What we got in the TV show is what we'll get from the books and response was so bad GRRM is just dicking about now' conspiracy theory. There's no other reason for why the books are taking so damn long outside of GRRM being that distracted by sports and cons.

I think that some of the main plot points are accurate to his plan and having a huge global backlash to your story must be incredibly demotivating.

Yeah, I think that things like Bran ending on the throne (or in a similar leadership role) is definitely his plan for the books. Not sure about the Dany stuff, though. Although the implications of her becoming a tyrant are there.

However, the way the story and characters are laid out in the books is very different and I can see it working out way better in written form. They rushed the ending. Two more seasons and it could have worked.

They somehow almost completely ignored the magic and otherworldly forces at work in Asoiaf and the way in which every conflict has consequences. There's going to be a famine in westeros, families broken, whole bloodlines of powerful people wiped out etc. GRRM pays attention to that in his writing and imo the show not caring about that anymore in later seasons is what ultimately broke it. Character assassinations aside.

bran on the throne was my guess way too early in the story and thats why you know grrm is a hack because some stoned college student shouldnt be able to put your shit together like that

my problem isn't the end point necessarily, but how they got there on the show because that's not where it had been leading. what made s8 frustrating was watching them forcing a square peg into a round hole in the laziest way possible, i.e. "dany forgot about the iron fleet", the whole thing about ~the city bells, and other dumb tales.

Yeah I was going to say, I don’t think the ending on paper is necessarily an issue it was the execution. They rushed through what was probably like minimum another three seasons of character development and plot in one season. They also cast aside and didn’t develop Bran and some other likely pivotal characters throughout the series that would’ve made the ending work. I genuinely believe theories like Jaimie was supposed to kill Cersei etc are probably accurate though, and I don’t believe that that was GRRM’s intention with the Night King. The endings for Dany and Bran though I do believe are his intention.

Yeah that's the thing, I don't necessarily mind how it ends for characters individually, but the journey of how it got there was so sloppy that it didn't feel earned, or felt like it completely dashed away seasons of character development (looking at u Jaime).

Totally agree. Obviously the books have way more characters and plots that make all of this more complex, but I think the basic plot points about Dany believing too much in her own greatness and that leading to her downfall, Jon's parentage reveal messing up things in the short term but ultimately not mattering all that much, and Bran ending up with some important role at the end are all GRRM's ideas.

ADWD came out in 2011. He had tons of time to publish TWOW while the show was airing. I believe he got stuck and realized that wirh what he wrote he didn't know how to get to that ending anymore as he veered way off the outline.

I’ve come to think that too. Probably the end games are accurate but the path to them is where it’ll be different.

Definitely.

The last 2 books weren't as good as the first 3 and with each new book, you can feel the quality going down.

GRRM is a TV show writer so after the backlash he knows he's done for unless he changes things and gets help writing them.
