However, the way the story and characters are laid out in the books is very different and I can see it working out way better in written form. They rushed the ending. Two more seasons and it could have worked.
They somehow almost completely ignored the magic and otherworldly forces at work in Asoiaf and the way in which every conflict has consequences. There's going to be a famine in westeros, families broken, whole bloodlines of powerful people wiped out etc. GRRM pays attention to that in his writing and imo the show not caring about that anymore in later seasons is what ultimately broke it. Character assassinations aside.

Totally agree. Obviously the books have way more characters and plots that make all of this more complex, but I think the basic plot points about Dany believing too much in her own greatness and that leading to her downfall, Jon's parentage reveal messing up things in the short term but ultimately not mattering all that much, and Bran ending up with some important role at the end are all GRRM's ideas.

The last 2 books weren't as good as the first 3 and with each new book, you can feel the quality going down.
GRRM is a TV show writer so after the backlash he knows he's done for unless he changes things and gets help writing them.
