is it boomer of me to ask when "bitch" was a slur? (if that's the quote in question, and and obvious disclaimer that it's classless and misogynistic to use against your opposing candidate)

i feel like it depends on the context (and now my brain is going "the word bitch didn't just fall out of the coconut tree" lmao)

lmao no I get you. like even writing my disclaimer I'm like... am I answering my own question. but bitch feels heavily colloquialized so I guess I just haven't really considered it as part of the words referenced as a slur, and obvs it has no place in what should be a professional campaign.

genuinely curious - what's the argument against it being a slur? 'bitch' is normalised as language to use against women (or to refer to femininity in men). it's a pejorative term that refers to a specific group (women - or perceived characteristics of women). imo that's a sexist slur which has (in parts) been reclaimed by women as well as queer men.

It was never queer men's to reclaim. They shouldn't be using it.

if a slur is an insult and something used to cause "affront" than a man calling a woman that in a derogatory way it's definitively a slur no?

This isn't like Meredith Brooks' I'm a bitch, I'm a lover, I'm a child, I'm a mother

I think a lot of us are thinking of “slur” as in “racial slur”, and since “bitch” is only misogynistic and not racist, it doesn’t feel like a true slur to some of us. But “bitch” is 100% a slur towards women in general.

This. With well-known slurs you would never actually say them ever. But you can say bitch in songs and on TV so I think that's causing confusion.

I think it's a word that has a complex relationship with how people use it. It's often acceptable use "bitch" in a lot of ways, and men don't get called out for using it in all sorts of ways.

You're right that people think about slurs like racial slurs or even LGBTQ+ slurs. One thing that your point is making think of is that people often won't use the full word in writing (like saying n-word instead of writing it out). But I rarely see bitch written or said like "b-word." When people do use "b-word", it's usually around children.

This isn't against you, but it makes me sad that you're genuinely asking this question. Misogyny wins again. :(

(I'm feeling withered since there have been many similar threads on here in the last 10+ years. I'm not meaning any disrespect towards you.)

Don't worry no offense taken. My question was more so if it was common to refer to it as a slur in reporting/publications. Hence the misogyny disclaimer. Generally I would think people first think c*** when you see "misogynist slur" in a printed publication.

Based on these answers I guess the answer is "yes, recently".

I suppose it depends on your both your definition of recently and the publications that you were thinking of when asking your question.

I'm not sure, though. I'm mid-to-late 30s. I've seen/heard it referred to as a slur/derogatory term for most, if not all of my life.

I don't think a lot of people consider it a slur in this context, but it definitely should be considered as one imo. So I'm all for the media calling this one because society as a whole should start recognizing it as such. It should not be liberally used when a woman says or does something you don't particularly like.
