Well...they tried to fix "these animals are not expressive, this is horrible" complaints re: the last movie but I am not sure they did a great job, some of this is still way too uncanny valley for me. I don't understand why they didn't just make this a regular animated 3D movie, the hyper realistic style did not work for this (and made all the merchandise ugly as hell which is why you can get all of it super cheat 2nd hand). I do find it kinda funny that the name "Taka" has been used in non-canon books for Scar's actual name for like 30 years but they had multiple chances to make it canon before this and didn't and now they've apparently decided to use it for this movie.
I would love it so much if they made this 2D. I watched Lion King a million times, I've watched Lion King 2, Lion King 1.5, I even watched most of that Lion Guard TV sequel (that was 2D animated as well! See they CAN do it! So was the Tangled TV show!), all of those things were 2D and it was great. But if they won't do 2D, they should have at least done their usual 3D stylized stuff, the style they used for this is just weird and offputting and I honestly hate it.
I thought that was what they would do (I still remember ppl being upset they went with that name instead of Taka) since they already went in that direction and people got over it. So for me it's funny that they deliberately avoided it in TLG and then used it for this, like what finally made them decide to use it when they've gone out of their way to avoid it before lol.
I feel like everything looks so bland and muted - even with the attempts at making them emote. I love how bright and colourful Hakuna Matata is in the original.
That's a bit part of it imo, like Lion King in general had pretty vibrant colors and then the musical numbers were even brighter still, and it translated very well into really cute merch too. All of this bland, muted stuff just is not memorable and doesn't stick in your brain nearly as well. Also I couldn't see shit during the new "Be Prepared" scene when in the 2D version that vibrant green made it super memorable.

Yeah like they heard the criticisms - nice, good - but it still just doesn't work and would be better as 2D.

The Lion Guard was quite fun, I still like the music!

His saving Mufasa kind of aligns more with Taka I guess.
