John Carpenter presents honorary doctorate to Jamie Lee Curtis

There are a few people I can directly connect the life I have today from the life I had back then. John Carpenter is one of them. What an honor for me today to have him present me, my honorary doctorate from the @AmericanFilm https://t.co/rSHdeSHZ2f

Honorary doctorates are so weird. Here, have this fake education certificate just because you’re famous, I guess.

It depends. Sometimes it's because you have so much practical experience/won awards/are known in your field it's the equivalent to having a Masters/Doctorate in that profession. I know someone who has an honorary Doctorate because in addition to winning almost every prestigious design award their work has been in the Smithsonian and Cooper Hewitt.

That feels valid. But is JLC that great in her field? She controversially won that Oscar (shoulda been Stephanie lbr) but other than that all I know her for are Freaky Friday, Halloween and that one with Arnold Schwarzenegger. None of which are exactly masterpieces.

My Alma mater gave Orlando Bloom one years ago and let’s face it his career hasn’t been much beyond elves and pirates 🧝 🏴‍☠️

lol that’s all you know her for, but you can’t even remember the name of an iconic James Cameron action movie (True Lies btw) or you don’t consider Halloween a masterpiece when it is one of the most influential horror movies ever? She was widely considered a sex icon back in the day and THE horror film *final girl.*

It’s an honorary award from the film institute, how is it not appropriate? Maybe if you don’t know much about film/horror maybe it seems weird…

She has the profile of someone who should get an honorary degree. Halloween is a masterpiece that horror movies STILL try to emulate, and a lot of that is due to her performance. In addition, she's won some of the highest honors you can win in her profession (an Oscar, BAFTA, several Golden Globes, Golden Lion, SAG) and has been steadily working in projects for decades. I also believe that it's a film school that is giving her that honor as well, so it makes sense.

MTE... they should stick to Walk Of Fame stars on some curb of Hollywood Bvd and their awards shows to stroke those egos...

I find it deeply offputting for actual academics with student loans
